Appearance
Nicole appears as a young woman in her early 20s. She suffers from albinism and in her human form her skin was faintly pink, now even paler unless using the "Blush of Life" kindred technique to flush blood into her skin to appear less pale, and her hair is stark white (which sometimes causes her to be confused for a Silver Fang by those who don't know Silver Fangs well) with her irises a strong pinkish-red. This makes her true appearance quite stark and recognisable. As a result, Nicole usually dies her hair, and sometimes wears coloured contacts to blend in better if she feels the need. Since learning the Mask of a Thousand Faces Obfuscate power, she has taken to using it to enhance her guise to appear more "normal" whilst around humans or kindred, more out of a sense of fashion than shame - it would be taken badly by the Garou if she hid her albinism, which is her metis disfigurement, and she is proud regardless - but acknowledges it makes her stand out, which is usually not a good thing for a Garou or Kindred, muchtheless an abomination... Therefore to most, Nicole appears to be somewhere in the light brown/dirty-blonde range, and her eyes clear blue. She keeps herself fairly pale skinned, though reduces the pinkish albinism tinge and deathly pallor.
In crinos or lupus form, she appears as a stark-white wolf with strong pink-red eyes. It is rare that she uses her Obfuscate to mask this appearance in any social or combat situation, and is only likely to do so when wanting to roam around a populated area in lupus form, in which case she uses her Obfuscate to make herself appear as a common, non-dangerous dog breed.
Nicole has no specific preference in fashion. She keeps a fairly casual eye on popular fashion and will usually wear clothing fairly in vogue, though rarely anything ostentatious or expensive-branded (both from a lack of desire, and usually a lack of resources - she has a comfortable salary, but she's far from rich). In casual usage, she favours jeans and t-shirts/blouses, but when fulfilling her role as an E.W. Scripps manager and/or Consul, she favours skirted business suits or short dresses both appropriate for the situation, and which compliment her looks - although she avoids deliberately wearing "sexy" clothing as sex appeal would be generally a wasted effort (or worse, could be taken offensively) with both the Garou (who have laws against Garou mating with Garou) and the Kindred (who lack hormones and so aethetic value will trigger a response that sexiness would not) and typically will only do this for special occasions (a date, when hunting mortals for food, etc...). She generally values light or "natural" make-up looks, with pink or light red lipstick generally favoured over stronger colours. She often consults fashion blogs and other Glass Walkers for advice on this, depending on the situation.
Despite the above, perhaps because of her dangerous job/life, Nicole knows that fashion is one of the few things she can enjoy, and takes advantage of it. She loves wearing attractive clothing, especially to social situations, and has quite a large collection of clothing and shoes. She only tends to take the time to talisman-dedicate her favourite clothing or when going to events such as moots, otherwise usually only talisman-dedicating essential clothing to protect her modesty if the clothing she wears would not naturally be able to accommodate the sudden size shift from homid to crinos.
Background
Born Faith McKay in a Calgary sept to two homid Glass Walkers. Born and raised stuck in Crinos form, she was home-schooled by the Sept. Perhaps it was the fact that computers were here main means of learning and contact with the outside world, but she quickly developed an affinity for technology. She underwent her first change at age 9 and thereafter remained in Homid form most of the time, both because it was more practical for a member of an urban tribe, and because she liked humanity and their technology (especially their gadgets). Soon, being in a form not her native Crinos was as natural to her as breathing. She passed her Rite of Passage with flying colours and became a promising Ragabash. Sure, you still had the occasional knucklehead tribe that disliked her for being a metis, but the Glass Walkers for the most part were pretty chill about it. She had a kinfolk boyfriend who she went steady with, and even got her pilots license. Life was good. Well, except for the whole Stop-the-Apocalypse-or-Die-Trying thing...
But then everything changed when on an infiltration and sabotage mission she somehow got in the middle of a feud between two powerful vampires. Too late she discovered that her tip-off had come from one of the vampires, who used Faith as bait to lure out the second - a powerful Assamite Warrior caste elder. The assassin, having also received false intel and believing Faith to be her quarry, showed the pup that she was no match for an elder vampire and dealt her a killing blow. As the Assamite stood over Faith's dying form, distracted, the true assassin struck. Faith would later learn that the assassin committed something called Diablerie on the Assamite - a kindred she would learn was called Persephone - in order to steal her power. By chance, however, enough of Persephone's blood was spilt from the assassin's blow that Faith lay in a puddle of Persephone's blood - blood which had fallen on her lips and mouth - and, from the thirst of dying, Faith licked it without realisation. An impulse that she would regret for a long time. Imbibing the Assamite's blood as she was dying inadvertedly began the Embrace - the change to one of the undead. The change was the most extreme agony she had ever felt as the Curse of Caine in her changing body fought against the spiritual essense of her Gnosis but, to her shame, she did not die during the change like most do, and became one of the undead. An unholy abomination feared and hated by both the Garou, and the vampires.
Things quickly fell apart. She found virtually no sympathy from her Tribe, who at best shunned her and left her to her own devices, whilst many of her other Sept-mates and former allies now saw her as Wyrm-tainted and corrupted, no different to a Black Spiral Dancer, and sought her destruction. Her initial attempts to deny the unending Hunger for blood did not go well, culminating in her frenzying from hunger and killing her own fiancée. This murder of a kinfolk was the proof the Sept needed to actively hunt her - but although she felt shame at her actions and what she was, Faith was a survivor and flet Calgary. She moved to Vancouver where she was lost for a while until eventually she realised that if she was "Kindred" and therefore OF the Wyrm, but still felt so passionately about fighting the Wyrm, that the Kindred as a race were therefore not intrinsically WITH the Wym. In fact, most Kindred knew nothing (and cared even less) about the Wyrm - and she found allies who understood her and her cause, and even accepted her Garou-Kindred nature. Guided by her totem, the Monkey King, the only person to have stood by her during eveything, she had a moment of illumination, and renounced her old life and auspice. Although this was unusual (and typically, poorly regarded), it would prove a wise course as Faith was finally laid to rest, and she began a new life as Nicole Llambert under the Philodox moon. Believing that her new role was to heal the Wyrm (both internally, and externally), she took this as an honourname and sought to find ways to improve relations between the Kindred and the Garou; not because she cared for the Kindred (most were wyrm-tainted by their own actions), but because she realised many were worth saving and could make good allies to fight the Wyrm (or at least not waste lives fighting). In time, with the Monkey King's guidance, she found an acceptance and control over her new form, mastering and coming to peace with it - achieving something her wise Kindred friend Cathy called "Golconda."
Events in Vancouver came to a head and, after saving the compact, left the city with the leader of the Glass Walkers, who had fallen to the Wyrm but she helped "heal" by convincing him (and she believes it true) that she was the reincarnation of his long-dead daughter. His crimes were too great to be allowed to stay, but there was remaining sympathy and support, and so he was exiled, and Nicole left with him.
Eventually, Nicole came to Ashford, where she had some connections she had made, and began helping repair Garou-Kindred relations much as she had in Vancouver. It was slow progress, but the Sabbat Crusade in 2016 gave the Causus Bellum for her to convince her Sept into action - aiding the "lesser evil" of the Camarilla/Anarch alliance against the "Wym-ridden evil" of the Sabbat. In the aftermath, a Dark Alliance has been formally made between her Sept and the Kindred, and as newly-appointed Consul (a Camarilla title) works hard to keep this fragile alliance working, for the good of both factions.
Human Society
Nicole has learnt the hard way that being around normal humans is hard and dangerous (more typically, for them) when you're a Garou, and also for the Kindred - the double-edge of suffering both Kindred bloodlust and frenzy, and Garou rage, makes Nicole reluctant to be around humans for their sake unless there is a need. Nonetheless, as a Glass Walker (and member of the Random Interrupt camp) living in a thriving city without a human identity is hard. To help with this, her tribe's leader, Don Theodore Carrington, has officially employed her in his E.W.Scripps Company, where she holds a position as a HR executive. Although she works enough with the company execs to not be a complete mystery, she is known to work directly for/under Don Carrington and only takes orders from, and is accountable only to, Don Carrington himself. She handles "special cases" which most assume are the usual corporate things that big companies try to cover up - people doing shady things they shouldn't that, if it gets out, can affect the company's reputation, and the sorts - and there is an element of truth to this, but her job is a combination Public Relations and Human Resources, as her job is quite simply to enforce the Compact, the alliance between the Sept of Sacrificial Friendship, and the city's Camarilla/Anarch rulers.
This is a full-time job. Ancient animosities run strong even in this Sept, and there are many on both sides who do not agree with the compact and would like to wipe each other out. Nicole's job is to investigate threats to the compact and deal with it by any means necessary. Most of the time, this means being a diplomatic ambassador to the Camarilla and Anarchs who run the city (a delicate balance in itself between the secretive Kindred that Nicole herself barely understands, much the less the Sept as a whole) and trying to smooth over issues such as kindred feeding/claiming domains controlled by the Garou (or vice-versa, packs hunting in kindred domains), giving a spanking to Garou who don't tow the line with the Sept's rules about the Compact - but in various cases, she effectively becomes a black operative, having to take out a threat in a more permanent, bloody manner, often with both the Kindred and the Sept wanting complete deniability in what is going on. It is a thankless job, with high risk and little official credit for the most dangerous things - but it has made Nicole work alongside various packs such as "The Misfits" and non-conventional Fera such as Giggles-at-Anger to get things done. For her, this is a calling, and a part of her chosen Honourname "Heals-the-Wyrm". Sometimes, to heal things properly in the long term (such as the ancient animosity between the Garou and the Kindred, especially in cities such as Ashford with a history of conflict; combining their strength and working together helps fight the Wyrm, healing Gaia) requires careful, selective cutting out of cancerous entities.
Personality
Nicole's reputation preceeds her. Metis are never overly popular in Garou society anyhow, a living reminder that two Garou broke the litany and indulged in what they consider sinful acts that spawned a subcreature. Then her own tribe and former sept effectively exiled her when she became an abomination (a vampire werewolf), and it took a lot of great deeds and working twice as hard for renown to get some form of acceptance. As an abomination, the Garou hated her for being a vampire, and the Kindred distrusted and feared her for being a werewolf, not understanding her beyond expecting her to be a rampaging beast wanting all vampires dead (and truthfully, this would once have been fairly true). When she enters an area, word of "the abomination" spreads fast amongst both communities. Sometimes this results in them watching and waiting to see what she will do/is up to before deciding if/how to act, and other times militant members of both sides (Scourges or Sheriffs for the Kindred, leech-hunting packs for the Garou) would launch attempts on her life. Therefore, leading a life (or unlife, as it were) of being shunned, or hated and hunted by her own kind on both sides of the fence, you would expect Nicole to be a walking bundle of rage. Yet she is not.
She was once, she will admit. Faith McKay was born under the Ragabash moon, which generally means her Rage was quite tempered compared to that of other auspices. She did quite well for herself at first - although many in her Sept hated her for being a metis, her own tribe (and the Bone Gnawers she often also dealt with) generally were more easy going about this. She was generally accepted by most of her tribe, and had enough friends (and a kinfolk boyfriend) to have a happy life. Then she died - and suddenly everyone turned their back on her. Even those who didn't hate her had to turn their backs lest their own lives be put at risk by the fallout. She had to leave behind everyone she knew and loved, with the shame of knowing both that they hated her, and that she had become everything she fought against - a minion of the wyrm.
She was lost awhile, and her Rage grew as she was forced to fight for survival and acceptance at every step. With no kindred willing to help teach her, it was hard to learn rules and control herself - she would try to feed off rats and livestock until she inevitably caved in and in a blood frenzy drained some poor mortal dry. In her rage and despair, she nearly lost herself to the wyrm, until she gained the Monkey King as a personal totem. With the Monkey King's guidance and help, she brought her Rage and kindred instincts under control, finding some degree of acceptance and control over what she now was, and coming to peace with it. In Vancouver, she managed to establish herself but the aid of two people changed her life - Roger Daly, the leader of the Glass Walkers who actually accepted her into his tribe and became a mentor to her, his patronage protecting her until she managed to gain enough renown to prove to her people that she "may be of the Wyrm, but not with the Wyrm" and was still a warrior for Gaia. The second, arguably more important, was the friendship of a Kindred canned Cathy - a member of the unfairly reviled and ostracised Salubri clan, who saw Faith unfairly hated and hunted for what she was much as how she had to pretend to be a Ventrue as lies about her clan being devil worshippers and murderous cannibals resulted in similar hatred and hunts if her true clan was revealed). Cathy helped Faith learn how to control her feeding, the beast in her vampiric blood, and taught her how to fake being a member of another clan and the essentials of Kindred society enough that Nicole was able to pass herself off as a Toreador (Faith did not know her own clan and it would be years before she would find out her true clan) and get some acceptance in Kindred society. But Cathy also told Faith about Golconda, the mythical spiritual state of being that she herself was seeking out - a state in which Kindred mastered the beast within and rid themselves of the curse, possibly regaining their mortality. This caused a dramatic apotheosis in Faith. She learnt that it was possible for her to "heal the wyrm" inside her by accepting her nature and mastering it. She finally accepted that Faith had died, and she had to become a new person - something the Monkey King had alluded to in his cryptic messages and quests. With Roger Daly's help, she renounced her old life and identity and undertook a Rite and became a Philodox (a rite that typically carries a degree of shame, but she claimed she had little renown to lose and that she was not rejecting Luna by renouncing what she was born under, but instead embracing the auspice she died under, the role Luna wants her to take in this new life). She took the name Nicole Llambert and the honourname "Heals-the-Wyrm" which she now saw as both a personal one (heal her own wyrm and achieve Golconda), and as Gaia's intention for her - to heal the rift between the Kindred and the Garou, and perhaps help other Kindred heal their own wyrm.
Since then, her entire existence is about healing the wyrm. This usually means trying to be diplomat and build bridges between the Garou and the Kindred, helping Kindred regain humanitas or seek Golconda, and helping others heal from wyrm taint. This can be very literal cleansing or removal of wyrm taint that corrupts, to helping mortals overcome addiction. She cares very much about this - and knows that those who suffer from taint, corruption and addiction have many demons and battles to overcome - both from their respective society who often mistreat or ostracise them, and from themselves. She knows this requires patience and understanding. A vampire getting angry and attacking may be a result of loss of control to the rage wyrm's corruption in them, but not something the vampire desired, and wants to overcome. Killing the vampire may end a threat, but helping the vampire heal and overcome, then helping the Garou in turn fight the wyrm by helping in their own way - is a greater victory in many respects.
As such, Nicole ordinarily appears exceedingly kind and patient, understanding and supportive in a way that typically only psychologists appear to seem. She is friendly, enjoys video games, most geeky pursuits, and is still a Random Interrupt hacker at heart. She loves fast cars, airplanes (she had a pilots license since before her Embrace and still loves to fly), fashion, and karaoke night with friends. But enemies should not mistake this for softness. She has the mark of the predator and the blood of a clan of assassins, and rage forged by years of adversity. She chooses kindness and non-violence as much as possible, but is not naive enough to believe everything can be resolved with pacifism. She is still a warrior of Gaia at heart and wyrm foes and those who threaten her will feel her claws and bullets.
Other Notes
Metis Disfigurement
Albinism - Nicole's skin is faintly pink and hair is stark white (which sometimes causes her to be confused for a Silver Fang by those who don't know Silver Fangs well), and.her irises are pinkish-red. In addition to being recognisable, she suffers a +2 Difficulty to Perception rolls when in bright light unless wearing protective lenses such as sunglasses. Nicole usually dies her hair and sometimes coloured contacts to blend in better if she feels the need. Since learning the Mask of a Thousand Faces Obfuscate power, she has taken to using it to enhance her guise to appear more normal whilst around humans or kindred, more out of a sense of fashion than shame - it would be taken badly by the Garou if she hid her metis disfigurement, and she is proud regardless - but acknowledges it makes her stand out, which is usually not a good thing for an abomination...
Nicole's Age
Nicole's biological age and appearance is complicated. As a metis, she was born in crinos form and, like wolves, physically matured faster than homid children. She underwent her First Change at only age 9, although that made her biologically the equivalent to a homid of 16 years of age. At this point, her body clock slowed to the normal rate for Garou, which is slower than that of normal homids. She was embraced (turned into a vampire) around 6 years later at actual age 16 (but the homid equivalent biological age of 22). Therefore whilst she's actually now in her mid-30s in actual years alive, her biological age should be in her late 20s, but the embrace stopped her apparent aging at what seems like 22 years of age.
Lynn Rosenburg
Lynn was a street hooker that Nicole met back in Vancouver, initially as a useful street informant to Nicole - but they became friends over time. Lynn became addicted to a wyrm-tainted, Pentex-created drug which resulted in Nicole leading a mini-campaign against the Pentex subsidiary that ended the drug distribution, then paid out of her own pocket to have Lynn put into rehab, whilst calling in favours from the Garou for cleansing against residual wyrm taint from the drugs. Lynn has now made a new life for herself. Clean for several years and no longer turning tricks, she now runs a support group and soup kitchen/homeless shelter in Ashford. Though it is run via donations, it has a few notable Garou providing donations when needed, and looking out for it - such as ensuring that neither the Kindred nor Pentex dare mess with it. As a non-kinfolk, non-ghoul, ordinary mortal, Lynn is as loyal to Nicole as is possible whilst being kept completely in the dark about both of Nicole's true natures (Kindred and Garou), both of which would likely demand Lynn's death (or turned into a Ghoul) if she were to learn the truth. Nonetheless, Lynn surely must suspect something at this point but, regardless, is loyal and keeping her mouth closed. On the rare time people may have commented about Nicole to her, she only says that Nicole has shown her true heart by her actions, and saved her life, and that is all she needs to know about her friend.
Combat Style
Originally a Ragabash, Faith's initial combat styles revolved around using her mobility and hit-and-run tactics. As a Glass Walker of the Random Interrupts, she was very much your classic technogarou, and preferred fighting with firearms or using technology (either directly, or by getting technology/elemental spirits to help, such as jamming technology, causing power surges, or controlling machines). Although she has evolved much since then, her natural disciplines still gear towards speed and stealth, although she has gained some level of ability in all the physical vampire Disciplines (Celerity, Fortitude, Potence). Therefore, if she wants to take out a target, she still prefers to rely on stealth and speed, rather than brute force. Calling on a spirit to disable a car, for her to stealth in and take the target out with a silenced pistol, is far more likely than a loud howl followed by a chase and wild slashing of claws to shred the car and its occupant.
Years of training and tutelage under the Monkey King and both Kindred and Garou tutors has made her an expert in the Garou martial art of Kailindo, as well as a level of proficiency with firearms akin to that of most highly trained police or military personnel. This makes her very versatile - although she prefers to use ranged weapons in combat, the reality is that she has gained more experience in hand-to-hand combat. So in a "stand up fight" where stealth is impossible or quickly lost, she typically uses ranged weapons at first to soften a target, then moves in for the kill with her claws. Against humans or where upholding the masquerade matters, she will rely on firearms or unarmed combat when forced into melee. Against supernatural foes, she will tactically decide what she thinks the best strategy and weapons are, and adapt accordingly. She won't move into clawed combat against a visibly stronger foe that she wouldn't last long against, but wouldn't constantly try to keep at range to shoot - especially as many of the things she regularly fights simply cannot be harmed by small arms.
Nicole is used to fighting on her own. She never really had a coterie or pack for long, and the few she has had she has eventually had to move on. Whilst she will follow orders from a pack leader or Garou of greater glory renown, she is not experienced in the usual Garou pack tactics, and is likely to mess up that role if it requires advanced coordination (her primal urge and instincts are still strong, so she is still competent).
She knows she has the benefit of both her Garou gifts and Kindred disciplines, and as such likes to combine them for best effect and/or in unusual ways. If fighting vampires, she will typically rely more on Garou gifts as she knows they know little about them or how they work. Likewise, if fighting Garou (typically rival sept members, sept rivals, firebrands, or Black Spirals) she will rely more on her Kindred disciplines for the tactical edge. Some may say this lacks honour, but she says honour is not the same as foolish pride - attacking a beast of an Ahroun Get of Fenris with your bare claws is not honourable, it is suicide. The Ahroun's weapons are his claws and strength, and her weapons are her stealth and guile. It is simply using what you have.
Social Style
As a consul (ambassador) whose primary role is to help uphold the compact, Nicole has many eyes watching her waiting for her to take a fatal mis-step. She knows a wrong word or inflection can made an immortal enemy in the Kindred, or cause a Garou to bring out the claws for an honour duel. Too much blood has been spilt needlessly on both sides, and this conflict only makes the Wyrm stronger (the wyrm can create more minions, but the Garou are dying out with far too numbers as it is). Therefore she attempts to gauge everything she says and does from the point-of-view of those she deals with. Whilst there are times that she has to stand her ground and do what she believes is correct for one reason or another, she generally tries as much as possibly to compromise or at least see the other person's perspective and try to come up with the optimal response. Some say that as a Random Interrupt, she sees the world as an Excel "IF" formula (ie "IF this equals X, then do Y"), albeit a complicated one. Sometimes this can result in her making decisions that seem clinical and logical rather than intuitive. Indeed, often they seem counter-intuitive and she will claim that relying overly on intuition is one reason why the Garou are now so few in numbers - it is too easy to bait Garou into anger and mis-steps that ultimately hurt the Sept more than it does the Wyrm. This is a battle of attrition, and the Garou need to learn to fight carefully, in new ways, with new allies, if they want to win.
The Camarilla title of Consul is appreciated, and Nicole takes it quite seriously as it grants her access to the city's Kindred Primogen, Elysium, and other Kindred-only events and activities, and direct the city's politics to a degree. But at heart it has little meaning to her. Her Sept position as Wyrm Foe matters far more to her. Whilst she does care about the Kindred as a whole (at least, those kindred who can be saved from the corruption of the Wyrm), they are a very distant second to the Garou, much like a soldier may care about helping civilians, but his own unit will always come first. She leads/coordinates in Revels during moots, coordinates packs within the caern against Wyrm actions (especially when these actions would end up stepping on Kindred toes and potentially affect the Compact). This role requires her often dealing with pack leaders and Ahrouns (who often want to take the position for themselves, seeing it as a stepping-stone to the more prestigious post of Warder) and, as Consul, is able to levy both to attempt to bypass avoidable conflicts between the two. This is usually to help preserve the compact and although this benefits the kindred equally as they do not wish to return to the antebellum state of being careful in the streets when hunting in case they became the prey to a pack, or having werewolves messily tear up investments and operations they spent years building up (because some Garou decided it was helping the Wyrm somehow), it ultimately is purely for the Garou's benefits. Many problems can be handled quietly or in a way that results in less collateral damage to humans, or less Garou killed - meaning the Garou can focus their numbers and resources on the big battles/foe that truly matter. Anyone dealing with her should be aware of this - she will try to find a way to benefit both sides but the bottom line is that she will always choose to back the Garou, even if she may not agree with them.
Therefore it is quite hard to provoke Nicole. As part of her job, she has to be diplomatic and patient, and suddenly shifting to crinos and tearing open the throat of a leech that annoys her (something she has been known to do in the past) is generally not the best recourse, so she will bite her lip (often literally) and try to resolve things. But she's a Garou at heard and has Rage akin to that of fostern Ahroun or Galliards, and will use her claws when she feels she has to, or if pushed too far. This makes her surprisingly good when dealing with clans such as the Brujah, Gangrel and many anarchs, with who you need to know when to talk and when to just pound their face into the ground to get them to listen. Anyone who attempts to be diplomatic and reasonable will usually find her very patient and willing to hear them out, often going to consult with experts in the issue before acting on it/giving advice if she feels it out of her area (even if they may APPEAR to be course, angry, or otherwise being difficult - an angry Brujah getting in your face may be seen by many as a problem, but Nicole will see that the Brujah was willing to come to talk in the first place, when others did not).
Signature Equipment
- Streetlight Changer fetish (bobblehead doll on car dashboard) - When activated (by tapping the bobblehead and contacting the spirit within) the spirit changes all lights at intersections in whichever way suits Nicole (to make things easier/safer for her and/or hamper those she chases or may be chasing her).
