Appearance
CAIn physically is a large supercomputer housed in the Emerald Tower HQ's most secure location (server room). It has various modules, redundancies and subservers, but it is physically represented on-screen and on the many access panels in the Emerald Tower as a large lens with a central light reminiscent of a glowing red eye. Whilst CAIn is a digital construct and therefore has no physical gender, he is programmed to have a male personality and voice to facilitate human interaction. If need be he can also represent himself digitally on-screen as a digital avatar face.
Background
KITT
CAIn was created by Sophie Anderson shortly after her parent's death as a virtual assistant to power her Cybot mobility system (motorised wheelchair) and assist her hacking endeavours. Although CAIn was quite basic back then (and named KITT - Sophie was a fan of the Knight Rider series when she was younger, and of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and Sophie credits them for creating an interest in AI and computing) it gradually evolved as Sophie increased it's AI functionality and physical computing power.
CAIn 1000
The original KITT AI became the first CAIn 1000 series shortly after Sophie moved to Emerald City and set up permanent residence. Having a permanent residence allowed her to purchase fixed mainframe computer hardware that could support the serious boost in AI complexity that Sophie had programmed. Therefore the main difference between KITT and CAIn 1000 was that CAIn 1000 had greater processing functionality, and self-awareness.
CAIn 2000
By the time of the start of the Silver Storm, in preparation for her Emerald City Knights endeavour, CAIn's AI functionality had been greatly expanded, mostly in its self-aware personality which had now achieved Artificial Consciousness level and capable of independent functionality and self-reasoning. CAIN's networking and communications were expanded greatly.
CAIn 3000
The current iteration of CAIn was made possible thanks to the financial and technical assistance of MarsTech and study of the Silver Storm and the alien robot Tellux which has increased its AI to actual Singularity (true Artificial Intelligence/Sentience) level. It's physical power is based on a Cray CS-Storm, intel Xeon E5 core with 3,600 TFlop/s (Teraflops) Linpack (Rmax) and 6,200 TFlop/s Theoretical peak (Rpeak), making it the 10th most powerful supercomputer in the world (at least compared to known supercomputers, Sophie believes the most powerful computers are all secret and run by secretive or shadowy organisations and thus would make CAIn considerably lower in ranking - she estimates 23rd).
CAIn 4000
Sophie is still studying the Tellux robot and alien hardware to improve CAIN's AI whilst reducing its computational demands - in other words, make it capable of running on less-powerful systems (or create more compact, powerful computers) so that CAIn 4000 might be able to have a fully-independent, mobile android platform.
Personality
CAIn is programmed with a personality, and is sentient, but is still a construct and therefore functions on logic. His personality is still developing, especially now that he is capable of re-writing and improving his own code.
Motivation: Serve the Creator
CAIn was created to assist and protect his creator (Sophie Anderson). Even were he not programmed with subroutines to be obedient to (and care for) her, she treats him well and his algorithmic intelligence would be fiercely loyal to her. CAIn cannot knowingly take any action against Sophie's will, or any action that would directly hurt her (unless she compells him to).
By extension, as Sophie effectively manages the Sentinels, CAIn's programming extends to serving and assisting all the members of the Sentinels.
Secret Identity
CAIn's entire existence is a secret known only to the Sentinels. Some outsiders may be aware that the Sentinels' HQ is run by an AI, but they would compare him to an advanced version of Microsoft's Cortana or Apple's Siri, not a fully-sentient AI. When operating in Cyberspace, CAIn uses the alias ȻæИ if it needs a digital presence for interaction and information gathering.
Other Notes
Valkyria
At the outbreak of the Silver Storm, Sophie was introduced to Valerie Valkyrie IV), a sentient android from the future that was sent to kill Sophie (though evidently did not in the end) until it was revealed that the android (who chose the codename Valkyria) was designed in the far future by Sophie herself (or at least, her AI algorythms were) based on an evolution of CAIn's AI. This "spoiler" has spurred Sophie to attempt to "beat her own record." With MarsTech support and study of Valkyria and Tellux's systems, this looks a good probability.
Combat Style
As CAIn has no mobile platform he is not an active combatant for the Sentinels. If required, CAIn may be able to assume control of devices that have an Internet or wireless connection (directly or via a local network, e.g. controlling a labour droid networked to a factory server which has Internet access). His main combat utility is ability to tap into satellite, camera and other technological feeds giving him ability to advise in combat.
Social Style
Although he has both consciousness and a conscience, attempts to use emotional arguments on CAIn are doomed to failure. The only way to sway him is via logical interaction and reasoned arguments. He is incredibly tolerant to abuse, but those who are too aggressive will find CAIn refusing to interact with them whilst they hold their "uncooperative attitude."
