Dr Naomi Fallon is a young human in her mid-20s. She keeps her dark brown hair cropped just above her shoulders in a way that compliments her face, usually selectively coloured in some manner (typically red, blue or pink, but sometimes mixing these combinations) - she has biotech hair augmentations, which allows her to change them to any natural or unnatural style, colouration or length she chooses (see "Biomorphic Hair" in signature equipment for details). She is fond of cosmetics which is typically applied in a socially casual manner to compliment her blue eyes and light tan complexion. She has a mole by the left side of her mouth which adds a distinguishing characteristic. She is average height for a female human, with a slender build, and is typically seen wearing a scientist's outfit.

Background

Naomi was born to respected scientists working for Life Innovations in Silversail, so it came as a surprise to no-one that Naomi was a natural-born genius. She began speaking earlier than typical, and took quickly to learning and scientific interests. As her parents tended to work long hours, Naomi spent little quality time with them; though she will admit that the quality time they did manage to spend was always good. Even when at home, they would often be distracted with their scientific interests, and so Naomi grew up either around carers, or around her parents' home-offices, and therefore lacking social interaction with others, whilst in learning-rich environments. She began to express an interest in their endeavours early on (to the extend a young child could) and learning came natural to her. When Naomi's pre-school teachers informed that she was failing to develop relationships with other children, and having social and sensory difficulties, her parents had Naomi tested for ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorders). This led to a diagnosis of "Autism Spectrum Disorder without disorder of intellectual development and without impairment of functional language" or Asperger Syndrome as it is otherwise known. This resulted in changes to both her education and care, especially as she was also diagnosed with pain hyposensitivity, which made her prone to getting hurt.

Although Naomi cycled through various interests as she grew up, she quickly latched on to her life-long special interest: Biological Science; likely due to exposure to strange and interesting life-forms that her parents studied, and frequent oceanographic trips to Kalo-Mahoi with her mother. When young this presented itself as an interest in different species and life-forms and how they worked, and as she got older she became more interested in the scientific specifics of how life-forms functioned. She was educated principally at Life Innovations' private school for the children of their many employees. A school that, as might be expected from a leading biotech firm, promoted the sciences heavily, in which she excelled. In school, Naomi preferred to keep to herself and focus on her interests and studies, but nonetheless made some friends. Her best friend was Krios, a Kalo who she shared some classes with. Naomi was bullied somewhat in school for being socially awkward, and Krios defended her when he could, but he could not always be present and the bullies knew it and it had a detrimental effect on Naomi's psyche. At Krios' suggestion, Naomi began participating in athletics, joining the swim and track teams. The physical conditioning was good for her health and boosted her self-confidence and ability to stand up for herself. She took to solo athletics easily, finding the structured, repetitiveness of running, swimming and other athletic endeavours to be both enjoyable and calming. She also enjoyed the science behind sports and wellness, which fed into her special interest. Krios was also a Brutaris enthusiast, a popular sport in the Pact Worlds originally originating on his native Kalo-Mahoi, and a member of the school's amateur league Brutaris team. As Naomi enjoyed swimming, it was no surprise Krios got Naomi interested in Brutaris; in which she proved to be a surprisingly adept Goalie for her team (a position requiring little coordination with her team-mates, something she struggled with). This would be a sport that she would continue to enjoy and follow, and is still a big fan of the Sea Hunters kalo team in the Brutaris Starstone Cup league.

Unsurprisingly, she chose to follow in her parents' career routes, focusing on scientific fields that played into her special interest, and went to the Sui Saolus Academy and majored in genetic bioengineering. At Sui Saolus Naomi preferred to keep to herself and focus on her interests and studies, avoiding much of the inter-lab rivalries. On graduating summa cum laude, Naomi worked at Life Innovations who had granted her a scholarship until she had achieved multiple PHDs and published several research papers, enough to fulfil the conditions of her scholarship. Although still technically associated with Life Innovations, who publish her papers and research, Naomi chose to leave Bretheda and travel the stars. Research was fascinating, but she wanted to travel and experience all the strange and wonderful life forms first hand in real-world conditions, not just on research trips. She considers herself a field scientist, although she spends most of her time in wherever her current office is analysing and writing up theorems and working on biotech breakthroughs. Although Life Innovations will pay for her achievements, she works as a freelance Lab Technician or medic to meet the day-to-day expenses. She considers this a form of "slumming it" and deplores being called a medic or thought of as a standard doctor, often citing "I'm not that kind of doctor" but the truth is that she enjoys hiring on with crews and serving as their science officer and ship medic as it allows her the opportunity to encounter strange new forms of life, and learn more about the various species she works with.

Personality

Unsurprisingly for someone raised by two doctors that work for a prestigious biotech firm, Naomi has strong ethics and beliefs in science for the betterment of all sentient beings. Although she is not against cybernetics, the vast differences in the genetic structures between her own species and that of both her parents intrigued her into genetics from an early age, and so she is passionate about learning more about this field. Therefore it is customary to find her working on scientific experiments and formulating theses in her spare time. She is a fairly devout follower of Oras, although that is not very apparent to those not in the know as she prefers to express her faith through her work practice, rather than by proselytizing. Her researching and developing biotechnology, and heavily augmenting herself, not only helps herself and others to change, improve and evolve, but is also an act of religious devotion.

Naomi is interested in all forms of knowledge, not just the life sciences, and is multidisciplinary and far more wide-knowledged than might be expected otherwise. She cares about all forms of life (from both an emotional and scientific perspective) and selflessly is always ready to do what she can to help others, and to this end cares little about rules and regulations - in fact believing that sometimes for the improvement of both science and betterment of lives, rules and ethics must be broken. Despite this, she has a strong character and is often underestimated, believing that she is unwilling to cause harm to others because of a Hippocratic oath - something she is quick to disprove when required, reminding surprised allies "I'm not that kind of doctor."

Other Notes: Asperger Syndrome and Sensory Issues

Asperger Syndrome: Naomi is on the autism spectrum, specifically having Asperger Syndrome. She is high-functioning and a combination of years of psychotherapy training and her genius intellect has enabled her to be able to overcome many of the drawbacks. Whilst she has trouble instinctively understanding non-verbal cues such as body language and expressions, she has "learnt" how to recognise tells - but this is a conscious effort based on knowledge, and can have glaring inadequacies when dealing with even common races that she may not have studied the characteristics of. Conversely, because she relies on knowledge, she is far more likely to have studies emotions, body language and motivation of non-human species and thus overall have better ability to perceive their motives and emotions than someone relying on common knowledge and instinct. She has difficulties not only perceiving others' emotions but in understanding and relating to them. This means it is common that Naomi may act in ways that might be considered brusque, rude or callous to others because he is unable to make the emotional connection between what she does and says, and how others will "feel" about it. Naomi, as a result, tends to delay a little more than most before responding in communication as she actively tries to gauge the consequences of her words or process what others are saying. But if she's going on instinct, her instinct can cause her to suddenly walk away in mid conversations, hang up communicators without warning, or if asked if an outfit looks good pointedly reply "no, it's ugly and makes you look fat." Many appreciate this honesty, but social protocols of politeness can be easily broken due to this. Naomi likes to be informed of "proper way to do things" in social circumstances, so she can learn to act appropriately. Naomi's brain requires order, stability and planning. She is a creature of routine and habit, carrying out the exact same routines and patterns consistently and always calculates plans of action for any situation - whether combat, business or social. She does not react well to change - someone interrupting her pattern, or forcing changes in plans (especially without sufficient warning) can trigger her and get her extremely irate or confused.

Her autism gives her great ability to focus on her special interests to the detriment of other things. This can be an advantage, such as being able to completely focus without any distraction or hindrance on healing someone even in the middle of a loud, dangerous environment or battle. Things outside of her special interest, however, she is notoriously hard to stay focused on and can quickly procrastinate or lose interest, with her mind typically wandering back to her special interests. Her special interest means that she has a heightened degree of insight and eclectic knowledge into her chosen area.

As is common for those with autism, Naomi suffers from sensory issues. Specifically, Pain Hyposensitivity. These are issues caused by the way her brain filters sensory input, and therefore are not physical in nature and cannot be completely treated with augmentations or surgery; although Naomi has given herself some augmentations to help her handle her condition. Like many with autism her audio and visual senses are a little different to that of neurotypicals, but not to a great enough degree to either provide any advantage or disadvantage compared to neurotypicals.

Pain Hyposensitivity: Although Naomi has no more tolerance to physical damage than any neurotypical in good physical condition, and her sense of touch is perfectly functional (if a little different compared to neurotypicals), her brain has difficulties filtering signals received from her pain receptors - with these signals generally getting "lost" and effectively ignored by her brain. This means that her ability to sense pain, injury or similar body awareness is severely impaired. As a teen she was hit by a brutaris disc and continued to play a full game in the belief that she was fine before an after-match check-up revealed she had in fact broken 2 ribs. Naomi is functionally immune to pain, with her family having commented that when Naomi complains that something hurts, it means she needs to be rushed to immediate surgery as she will typically only feel pain once it is of a sufficiently high pain index as to be debilitating to most people. Although she may not feel the pain of an injury, the injury itself affects her physically as it would any normal person. If she broke a leg she would not suffer the pain of the injury, but would be unable to function properly without proper use of her leg. As a result of this Naomi is far more likely to suffer injury (accidental or combat-related), sickness or similar without becoming aware of it until there are obvious, perceivable indicators - often compounding the seriousness of a condition or wound. Naomi has an implanted Biomonitor to inform her of the "condition" of her body and injuries she takes - but this requires her to have to deliberately check her status much as she would be checking on the status of a companion - and in the heat of battle, or if she does not feel there is a need for it, it is easy for her to forget to check her status until a while after she is injured.

Combat Style

As a non-combat scientist, Naomi is limited in her combat ability. She is in good physical shape with above-average strength, and very above-average stamina and hand-eye coordination and, after a lifetime of active athletics as a focus and hobby, is far more resilient and enduring than might be expected for a "doctor." Used to the windy and cold environments of her native Silversail, or the depths of Kalo-Mahoi, she is rarely affected by anything less than the most extreme wind or cold temperatures, and highly resistant to other environments. She is highly proficient with small arms, especially injection weapons, and as such can provide decent fire support if required. Her scientific and medical knowledge, however, makes her a highly effective combat medic (though she hates being called such) when required and she can be relied on to do her best to keep her allies in the fight (or at least away from the Lady of Graves). It is easy to forget that she is not a doctor in the medical sense, but a scientist specialising in genetics. She has formulated theorems and breakthroughs and made restoratives and counteragents that she can apply in combat to great effect - empowering herself or allies, or debilitating opponents. She can deliver these through her injections, or in special darts in her injection pistol. If coordinated with, her knowledge can quickly turn the tide of battle in favour of her allies. Her augmentations give her better senses in low-light and darkness than non-augmented/equipped humans, and this can sometimes be used as an advantage as she may be able to use them to tactical advantage.

Social Style

Naomi is generally easy to get along with, but slow to trust. Her willingly discussing her autism and sensitivity is a good sign that someone has gained her trust. Whilst she doesn't attempt to hide them, she considers it to be a personal matter not of others concerns and typically only freely informs them of things that are directly relevant to them. To gain her trust is usually just a matter of time for those who show they have compassionate natures, especially if they are capable of holding intellectual discussions - especially about the sciences, but any field of knowledge is good and, in fact, areas of knowledge she is unfamiliar with will peak her interest. She has little patience for those who do not respect science, knowledge or others lives. Because Naomi has trouble with nonverbal cues, idioms and similar, she appreciates it when others make the effort to clearly state how they think and feel about things (so she does not have to try to figure it out) and who are understanding of her difficulties understanding how others feel and occasional apparent callousness or lack of empathy.
