Appearance

Portrait-Dr Fallon.jpg

Dr Jennifer Fallon is a young human in her late-20s. Although she has naturally dark brown hair, it is extremely rare to see it this way. Most of the time, her hair is selectively coloured in some manner, typically overall near-white stark platinum blonde, or similar, as she is fond of her biomorphic skin magitech (see augments signature equipment) and changes her hairstyle and cosmetics style frequently and fairly seemingly randomly. She generally favours short and stylish hairstyles, with the "bixie" haircut being her standard, typically longer on one side/the front and much shorter on the other/back, in a way that compliments her face. But this changes frequently based on her whims.

She is fond of cosmetics which is typically applied in a socially casual manner to complement and add colour to her near-colourless grey eyes and tanned complexion, but favours "smoky" style eye make-up and darker shades of lipstick or gloss. She is of average height for a female human, with a slender build, and is typically seen wearing a scientist's outfit when not in her armour. Her default look generally looks pleasing, but professional - but she can surprise people by going out in extremely outlandish and colourful costumes, with glamorous and exotic hairstyles and make-ups to match, or looking like a femme-fatale from an old Golarion noir movie. She enjoys actively changing her hair length, style, and colour, along with cosmetics and a (usually killer) dress to match, to suit a "look" she decides on for an event. Some have claimed she does this out of pure narcissism and desire for attention (and she has not denied this) but observant people have noticed that her seemingly erratic changes happen to suit current fashion trends on the planets and locations she is on, which actually helps her to better socialise and mix with local culture.

A gallery of some of her seen styles and outfits can be found at the end of this file.

Background

Origins & Diagnosis

Jennifer was born to respected scientists working for Life Innovations in Silversail, so it came as a surprise to no-one that Jennifer was a natural-born genius. She began speaking earlier than typical, and took quickly to learning and scientific interests. As her parents tended to work long hours, Jennifer spent little quality time with them; though she will admit that the quality time they did manage to spend was always good. Even when at home, they would often be distracted with their scientific interests, and so Jennifer grew up either around carers, or around her parents' home-offices, and therefore lacking social interaction with others, whilst in learning-rich environments. She began to express an interest in their endeavours early on (to the extend a young child could) and learning came natural to her. Whilst Jennifer always seemed a little "odd" compared to normal children, it was during her early school years that her teachers began to notice issues - Jennifer was having social difficulties, failing to develop normal relationships with other children, and frequently clashing with them, She was highly competitive and very strong-tempered, with an atypical level of cunning, patience and need to get even. When she deemed herself to have been wronged by other children, she would often wait until the right time and place and execute an obviously deliberate and planned vengeance, often considered to be overboard for the intended slight. Worse, was an obvious lack of remorse for her actions. This led, after consultations with pscyhologists, to a initial diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder. This got her placed onto her school's watch list for children with special needs but, although Jennifer was forced to participate in regular counseling sessions with psychologists, her condition did not only not seem to improve, but in fact got more serious as she entered her teen years, leading to her gaining somewhat of a reputation as the "bright but crazy" girl. This led to her having few friends (especially with her natural aversion to making friends and seemingly incredible ability to annoy most other children). Jennifer was bright enough to realise that she was unpopular and, although it went against her natural instincts, learnt to "pretend to be normal" so as to avoid problems - not out of a sense of remorse or morality, but a desire to not have to undergo what she felt was undesired hassle. But her true nature was impossible to conceal all the time and would occasionally burst though. After one particularly violent clash with a classmate, seemingly out of proportion to the instigating events, which would have resulted in serious physical harm to the classmate had others not intervened, she underwent a full psychiatric assessment which included a YPI (Youth Psycopathic Traits Inventory) assessment, which clearly showed indicators of her having ASPD (Antisocial Personality Disorder). Physical scans confirmed neurological data to back a diagnosis that her brain showed physical characteristics typical of diagnosed psychopaths. Although this was something that was impossible to "cure" - this resulted in serious changes to both her style of education and care. Specialised educators with expertise with ASPD helped instill in her a form of morality - an acceptance of socially acceptable behaviour and ethics not because of a sense of compassion, remorse or respect for society (things Jennifer cared nothing about) but rather a sense of personal pride, honour, and the realisation that this conformity would lead to her better blending in, using others and, ultimately, gaining longer-term benefits that satisfied her, as opposed to endless social and legal problems. Even to this day, Jennifer refers to herself as a "pro-social psycopath" - she cares about societal improvement as a whole, but not individual people or their emotions or concerns beyond their usefulness to her.

Growing Up

Jennifer cycled through many interests as she grew up. She would become interested in things, dive into the interests deeply then, after an impressive level of investment and research, just as quickly get bored if things did not keep changing or providing new stimulus, leading to her rapidly losing interest and switching hobbies. As she got old enough to be allowed to do so, she found an interest in training with small arms and took part in amateur competitive shooting. Again, the repetitiveness of target practice bored her, but competing brought out her competitive nature. She also latched on to her life-long interest in Biological Sciences; likely due to exposure to strange and interesting life-forms that her parents studied, and exposure to the faith of Oras, God of Adaptation, Evolution and Natural selection - a faith that Jennifer could believe in as it was more scientific and personal-aims focused than subservience to an external entity. When young this presented itself as an interest in different species and life-forms and how they worked; and as she got older she became more interested in the scientific specifics of how life-forms functioned and, especially, how natural biology could be enhanced with science or technology. After her ASPD diagnosis, she became particularly interested in understanding the mind (especially her own, and how/why it differed from neurotypicals) from both a psychological and biological perspective; an interest that would ultimately lead to her getting into the field of Neurocybernetics. She was educated principally at Life Innovations' private school for the children of their many employees. A school that, as might be expected from a leading biotech firm, promoted the sciences heavily, in which she excelled. In school, Jennifer preferred to keep to herself and focus on her interests and studies, caring little for others that she frequently saw as annoyances, beneath her, or pointless wastes of time (as she figured she would not remain associated with them once the schooling days ended), but nonetheless made some friends. Her best friend was Krios, a Kalo with who she shared some classes. Krios was a Brutaris enthusiast, a popular sport in the Pact Worlds, and a member of the school's amateur league Brutaris team. Although she was not capable of being a good team player so had little interest in competing, she grew an appreciation for it as a sport (if only to support her most loyal friend who she cared about - in her own way) and this would be a sport that she would continue to enjoy and follow, and is still a supporter of the Sea Hunters kalo team in the Brutaris Starstone Cup league.

Higher Education & Employment

Jennifer's original appearance during young adulthood

Unsurprisingly, Jennifer went to the famed Sui Saolus Academy and majored in cybernetics and biotechnology, although she also did extensive studies in psychophysics and neuropharmacology. At Sui Saolus, Jennifer preferred to keep to herself and focus on her interests and studies, avoiding much of the inter-lab rivalries and focusing on her pesonal achievements - but made a new, best friend in Barsala Zharliska Sonari of House Uland, a Kasatha studying genetics. Jennifer and Barsala were polar opposites; Jennifer initially believed Barsala was intellectually deficient (if asked, she would probably still say that was the case) but grew to respect her passion and instinctive understanding of science. Whilst Jennifer was a studious scientist who relied on careful research, hypothesis and analysis, Barsala just seemed to instinctively understand "what worked." Despite their differences, the two women also became lovers. Whilst Jennifer was incapable of returning Barsala's emotional feelings, she cared for her in her own way, an affection that still holds to this day. After graduating top in her class, Jennifer worked at Life Innovations, who had granted her a scholarship, until she had achieved multiple PHDs in cybermedicine and related neuroanatomy and neurotoxicology fields, and published several research papers; enough to fulfill the conditions of the repayment terms of her scholarship agreement. Her friend Barsala managed to achieve employment in the prestigious Iratha Incorporated biotech firm, and the two hold a [mostly] friendly competitive rivalry to this day. Jennifer left Bretheda to travel the stars... mostly out of boredom of being at the same planet all her life. Research was fascinating, but she wanted to travel, experience and study all the strange and wonderful life forms first hand in real-world conditions, not just on research trips. She considers herself a field scientist, although she spends most of her time in wherever her current office is analysing and writing up theorems and working on biotech and cybermedical breakthroughs. Although she kept her association with Life Innovations, who pay for, publish, and use her papers and research, she works as a freelance cyberdoctor, neuropsychologist or field medic to meet the day-to-day expenses. She considers the latter a form of "slumming it" and deplores being called a medic or thought of as a "standard doctor", often citing "I'm not that kind of doctor" - but the truth is that she enjoys hiring on with crews and serving as their science officer and ship medic as it allows her the opportunity to encounter strange new forms of life, and learn more about the various species she works with. Her natural inability to make emotional connections to others means she does not get upset when her companions die and/or can walk away from a group with barely a moment's thought as soon as she loses interest in them. She has wandered the Pact Worlds for several years, worked alongside both legal employes and shady ones such as being the on-call, back-alley medic for the Golden League via a "friend" she made on Absalom Station (Lhana "Diamond" Nokoriso).

Current Activities

Jennifer still has occasional contact with both Krios and Barsala. Whilst she still respects Krios, their lives have gone different directions and so he has little usefulness to her - and therefore she expends little energy in keeping their relationship alive. But she understands he was a good friend who "put up with a lot of crap" from her, and has done freelance jobs with him enough to respect his skills as an operative, enough to at least ensure she doesn't burn that proverbial space-bridge. She is still in regular contact with Barsala, however. Although Jennifer would be reluctant to admit it she is impressed by Barsala choosing (from Jennifer's point of view) to stagnate her personal scientific progression by becoming a holovid science educator - sharing her passion for Science by educating others, rather than focus on research and seeking to gain scientific acclaim and awards for scientific breakthroughs; a selfless act that Jennifer simply cannot grasp why anyone would choose to do. Nonetheless, Jennifer respects Barsala's drive and civic-mindedness and follows "Dr B's Science Jubilee" with almost religious zeal, often contributing and aiding her friend in her own little ways, perhaps by sending a little bit of research or knowledge found her way, or by scaring off (read: stalking and terrifying) would-trolls and haters on Barsala's social feed. The two friends regularly communicate via the infosphere, share theories and ideas, and meet up when there's an opportunity.

Personality

Unsurprisingly for someone raised by two doctors that work for a prestigious biotech firm, Jennifer has strong ethics and beliefs in science for the betterment of all sentient beings. Although she is not against cybernetics, she has been intrigued about neuroscience from an early age, and so she is passionate about learning more about this field. Therefore it is customary to find her working on scientific experiments and formulating theses in her spare time. She is a fairly devout follower of Oras, although that is not very apparent to those not in the know as she prefers to express her faith through her work practice, rather than by proselytizing. Her researching and developing biotechnology, and heavily augmenting herself, not only helps herself and others to change, improve and evolve, but is also an act of religious devotion.

Jennifer is interested in all forms of knowledge, not just the life sciences, and is multidisciplinary and far more wide-knowledged than might be expected otherwise. She cares about all forms of life (from a societal and scientific perspective) and sees her science as being a way to help others, and to this end cares very little about rules and regulations. In fact, she believes that sometimes for the improvement of both science and betterment of lives, rules and ethics must be broken. Despite this, she has a strong character and is often underestimated, believing that she is unwilling to cause harm to others because of a Hippocratic oath - something she is quick to disprove when required, explaining to surprised allies "Lots of ways to help people. Sometimes heal patients; sometimes execute dangerous people. Either way helps."

Other Notes: Antisocial Personality Disorder

Although Jennifer seems friendly, easy to get along with and both helpful and jovial, those who get to glimpse beneath the surface are often startled at what they find - or rather, what they don't. Although Pact Worlds neuropsychologists prefer to use the official term and diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder others, including herself, use the more infamous term - Psychopathy.

As it is hard to determine true psychopathy at an early age, her actions during her youth were typically misconstrued as behavioural issues or even other disorders. It was only after the full YPI (Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory) assessment and the neurological scans that followed, that the true extent of her disorder became known. She has worked hard - and still works hard every day - to try to understand and conform to the expected norms of others. This is not easy for her as people inevitably differ on ideologies - some are quite content to perform actions for their own satisfaction that others would consider reprehensible - and she tends to be cautious around new people until she can "figure them out" and know how best to act around them. But ultimately it is an act. A dance she does to further her own aims by being a wolf in sheep's clothing. Whilst she will seem caring and helpful, the reality is that she is neurologically incapable of developing social-emotional connections to others. Whilst she may enjoy someone's company, and appreciate their skills, this will ultimately be because she is receiving a benefit from the relation. The moment that the person ceases to provide benefits or interest to Jennifer , she quickly discards them and moves on with no hesitation. This has led to her "ghosting" many allies and groups, often leaving them wondering what happened. Unhindered by shame or remorse, Jennifer does what will advance her aims or give her satisfaction as her prime motivation. Her brain releases more dopamine than a neurotypical brain when "rewarding" her for her endeavours, meaning that she has a natural compulsion to pursue activities that give her this kind of reward. Whilst she usually channels this into her scientific pursuits and other hobbies, it can cause her to do things at the expense of others, often callous or manipulative; or actions that could have negative effects such as overconsumption of alcohol, gambling, or willingness to get intimate with others with little consideration for the consequences.

As is common for people with her condition, she suffers from the "Dark Triad" of Psychopathy, Narcissism and Megalomania, although her education managed to instil a sense of honour, pride and morality that makes her "pro-social" and actively attempt not to give in to her "natural, dark impulses" to use and abuse those who would let her, just because she can, and enjoys doing so. But these are things she actively has to pursue, and her natural instincts are polar opposites - something that others forget until too late when her true colours inevitably show through. She is quick to pick up new interests and invest in them, quickly mastering them, before getting quickly bored when she feels that "nothing new is happening" and move on. She innately sees everything as a challenge - either a personal one against herself, or (due to her narcissism) to prove her superiority.

Combat Style

As a non-warrior and scientist, Jennifer is limited in her combat ability. She has naturally good hand-eye coordination and, as she has trouble perceiving danger and a greater reward-drive than most, has participated in many hobbies and interests that have made her more resilient than might be expected for a "doctor." She is surprisingly proficient in the use of basic melee weapons, and the use of small arms, especially injection weapons (weapons intended to inject something into the target on a successful strike), and as such can provide decent fire support if required, and capable of holding her own in melee if pressed. She additionally has some concealed combat-enhancing augmentations and tends to surprise would-be antagonists who assume she is a defenceless doctor, especially if caught without her primary weapon. Nonetheless, although she is good enough to defend herself and take on low-level threats, or surprise more dangerous foes, she ultimately does not have the physicality or training to directly take on trained warriors in a fair fight.

That said, Jennifer doesn't believe in a fair fight, and thinks honour in combat is a fool's game. To her mind, combat is conflict where someone wins and someone loses, possibly losing their life in the process. To expect your enemy to stick to archaic forms of honour, chivalry or fairness instead of using any advantage they have to win, makes absolutely no innate sense to her - so she typically sees no need to restrict her combat behaviour to socially-acceptable levels, and is likely to bring her scientific and medical knowledge and cunningness to bear with great effect as soon as she feels it is needed (although she may limit herself to said social conventions if she feels the negative consequences of doing otherwise outweigh the actual threat level present). This can make her very effective at coming up with devastating tactics and tricks that normal people would not conceive of, granting victories to her and her allies, and often horrifying her allies in the process. Why have a protracted and risky laser fight against a numerically-superior force when you can just open an airlock and have them all sucked out into the cold vacuum of space? The fact innocent civilians would be killed too in the process would mean little to her. Her logical mind would realise the likely fallout of this would be a reason to not rely on it as a first resort - but if she felt her life (or mission) was in peril, then it would almost certainly turn into the main tactical option without remorse.

Her biotech expertise, and commensurately high skill in both the Sciences and Medical arts, makes her a highly effective combat medic (though she hates being called such) when required and she can be relied on to do her best to keep her allies in the fight (or at least away from the Lady of Graves). As this is often her primary role (as she understands that fighting is risky, and prefers to let others take the risks - and keeping them alive to protect her is the best way to protect herself), it is easy to forget that she is not a doctor in the conventional medical sense, but a scientist specialising in neurochemistry. She has formulated theorems and breakthroughs and made restoratives and counteragents that she can apply in combat to great effect - empowering herself or allies, or debilitating opponents. She can deliver these through her injections, or in special darts in her injection pistol. If coordinated with, her knowledge can quickly turn the tide of battle in favour of her allies. Her augmentations give her better senses in low-light and darkness than non-augmented/equipped humans, as well as some biotech augments than can have combat applications, and these can sometimes be employed to gain a (typically sneaky) tactical advantage.

Social Style

Portrait-Dr Fallon8.jpg

To those who don't understand how her mind works, Jennifer often seems to be a contradiction. She will appear to be easy to get along with and openly helpful, and this is often the impression most people will have of her. But this is simply a conscious behaviour to fit in and advance her goals - and she understands that a carrot approach typically works better than a stick. Some have confused her with being an Android, which she respects and claims to understand better than most as they share some similarities as regards difficulty understanding emotions. But at least Androids can feel emotions for others - Jennifer can not. Some may think this makes her a proverbial ticking time bomb, but that is far from the truth. Due to her narcissism, Jennifer works hard to prove (including to herself) to be the best she can be and is often her own biggest critic. Others who applaud and praise her skills and attributes (even her looks) will likely befriend her quickly. Although this is superficial - she does not truly care about them, but their praise feeds her narcissism - she will enjoy their company, as it brings value to her (people who appreciate her, and she can manipulate) and therefore will nurture that relationship (as others have commented: not unlike how a farmer cares and nurtures for their cattle, right up until sending them to the slaughterhouse). As long as they keep proving they have worth to Jennifer , either by proving their competence and skills, or simply by her enjoying their company for whatever reason, she will be highly reciprocal and, seemingly, a good friend.

Those who are not respectful (some would say: fawning) towards her risk becoming perceived challenges/threats if she respects their ability. If she does not respect their ability and see them as a potential challenge/threat, Jennifer then typically instead perceives them to have no useful benefit to her. Either way, they will quickly get to see her true colours. At best, she will ignore them. At worst, she will be antagonistic, callous and manipulative towards them. She will often make her disapproval clear - at best with a casual lack of interest, at worst with downright hostility if confronted. When she feels wronged, she does not forgive and forget - she is patient to a degree only someone with a mind like hers can be, but she WILL "get even" or prove her superiority. If offended, the best way to get into her good graces is, as Krios once said, "let the crazy doctor win (but don't let her realise you let her win)." If she feels the person is a potential deadly threat at some stage, a pre-emptive surprise attack to "remove the future danger" is not as uncommon as her allies wishes they were. The decision whether or not to eliminate the threat will be based purely on a logical analysis of pros and cons of the action and its repercussions against the threat level, not on any emotional or empathic criteria.

She is usually unwilling to discuss her psychopathy with others she does not trust - as they often react "as the ignorant and uneducated often do; with fear" but her being more willing to discuss it with someone is a good sign that someone has gained her trust and respect (as much as she is capable of in that regard). Whilst she does not actively attempt to hide it, nor is she embarrassed about it or otherwise feel it a negative thing, she considers it to be a personal matter not of others concerns and typically only freely informs them of things that are directly relevant to them. She likens discussing her psychopathy to being like discussing someone's sexual organs - only relevant to specific people, in specific times, and not something you want to discuss with every random stranger you meet. To gain her respect is usually just a matter of time for those who show they bring benefit to the group, especially if they are capable of holding intellectual discussions - doubly so if they are about the sciences, but any field of knowledge is good and, in fact, areas of knowledge she is unfamiliar with will pique her interest even moreso.
