Background

Zachary grew up watching the original Star Trek tv series and comic and it inspired his imagination. He admits to being a geek from an early age, enjoying most geeky interests - but Sci-Fi, and especially Star Trek, were always his favourite. It even inspired him to learn more about other cultures, and even learnt the Vulcan and Klingon languages in his teens (he thought it would be cool and impress the girls - it didn't). He discovered a talent for art when young and ended up taking it as a career - studying at California State University Ashford and then a dignified career as a struggling artist and waiter, until he got a lucky break as an illustrator for a run with IDW comics based in San Diego. That got him an "in" to the comics/graphic novel industry, and since then he has done reasonably well doing freelance work for several of the big names, although he predominently works for IDW and Image Comics, each of which publishes a creator-owned graphic novel series he does. It hasn't made him rich, but it puts food on the table, and has given him a certain degree of fame. Something that would prove useful during an Ashford Comic-Con when he was doing a panel on the comic industry and signing and he met a pretty science teacher who enjoyed one of his sci-fi comics, also Zachary's favourite. They got talking, discovered they were both Star Trek fans (in her case, it inspired her to study science) and, before they knew it, they'd gotten married.

Alice Landsdale

Life was good - their combined incomes made for a comfortable life, and they enjoyed doing things together. They enjoyed going to Comic-Con and Sci-Fi conventions together, often in themed Cosplay. They went to San Diego Comic-Con the year that the new 2009 Star Trek movie came out, and were privileged to be amongst those who saw the cast in the panel. He and Alice went cosplayed as Starfleet Science Officers (though Zachary cosplayed a Vulcan, as he'd always loved ST for its aliens and species) and whilst seperated from Alice to have a toilet break, was attacked and Embraced by someone wearing a klingon outfit. Whether it was a coincidence, or perhaps some kindred trying to prove the superiority of the klingon empire over starfleet, was never discovered. Since then, Zachary now believes (or according to Dr Quinzell, needs to believe) that he is a vulcan trapped in this century (thanks to a klingon attack at his starbase, causing a temporal anomily), and justifies most of his vampiric abilities as being due to his vulcan phisiology. Alice had a very hard time of it at first, not understanding his sudden, constant obsession and delusional belief (she was aware he was "mugged" at the Con, but took all his actions since as a form of shock). But "Kelsar" (as he now insisted on being called) became so strange in his habits that Alice feared for his health, leading to an argument when trying to convince him he was not a vulcan, causing Kelsar to frenzy on her. Fortunately for Alice, their dog "Tribble" (who had been uncomfortable around him since they returned form the Con) attacked him, causing him to exsanguinate the dog instead, but giving Alice the chance to flee and seek help. It was shortly after that Dr Quinzel came to visit them, and she has been a great help.

Other Notes: Self-Annihilation Impulse

Zachary feels a deep sense of revulsion for his flesh, and is literally terrified of the thought of "living" forever. This revulsion is entirely unconscious, however; on a conscious level he is totally unaware of his "death wish" although he may demonstrate a morbid streak. Whenever Zachary is confronted with more-or-less direct evidence of his immortality he undergoes internal conflict that can cause him to begin to undertake some sort of potentially deadly behaviour. This may be as direct as storming into Elysium and giving the Prince a piece of his mind, or might be more subtle such as breaching the Masquerade by talking to a reporter. In any event, the pursuit of self-destruction is not a conscious decision but he will doggedly go about his "chosen" task until it's completed, resisting any attempts to talk him out of it. He may even consciously believe that the actions he's undertaking are perfectly safe. The compulsive behaviour may typically only last a few minutes or hours, but the consequences can last a lot longer.
