Appearance
Evelynn "Eve" Wren is an attractive brunette with classic-British paleness (even after she's recently fed) and loose, naturally slightly-wavy chestnut-coloured hair that, at natural length, hangs about half-way down her back, although she often has it tied up or in a ponytail, especially when biking. She has piercing grey eyes and a classic pin-up, voluptuous figure which often gives her the impression of being plus-sized despite actually being in good physical shape at the time of her Embrace, which also is known to have a natural slimming effect. She favours light make-up popular during her mortal days, though most of the times she typically just employs some lipstick, but can look surprisingly glamorous when she makes the effort to be presentable.
Whilst working, Eve typically keeps her hair in a ponytail, wears trousers (jeans or leather, typically black) and her signature black leather jacket, with a t-shirt or blouse. Casually, Eve tends to let her hair loose and wears much the same, with jeans or skirts and blouses (often old-fashioned, conservative or country-style) becoming more common than leather or t-shirts. When going to social occasions (such as Elysium) she favours one-piece dresses often considered retro, which accentuates her natural figure. Something others have noted is that even when dressing glamorously, her attire is always comfortable and unrestrictive, typically proving areas where she can conceal her Glock 27 G4 compact pistol, such as in a pocket or (when wearing a skirt) inner thigh holster. Like a true urban predator, her clothing is innately designed to appeal and blend in with her prey or social situation, yet allow her to act without restriction if trouble flares up. Many think this is not even a conscious decision, but just habit formed from an unlife of being nomadic and constantly expecting trouble from every corner.
Background
Born Hayley Elizabeth McGeorge, Hayley was the only child of an American who served in the Great War, who married a London nurse he met after he was attached to her unit as an ambulance driver and mechanic. A good-hearted, though spirited and mischievous youngster who enjoyed defying social conventions, Hayley grew up spending time working on vehicles with her father; she knew how to take a car apart and rebuild it before she was even old enough to actually drive them.
To take advantage of her adventurous spirit, her parents got her into the Brownies when she was just 7, which Hayley absolutely loved and absorbed everything they could throw at her. She would continue through the Girl Guides different levels as she got older, progressing to the Guides when she turned 10, then the Sea Rangers when she turned 14 and was a member until the Second World War caused disruption in everyone's lives. She credits her membership of the Guides as being what gave her orienteering and survival skills that would serve her well in her unlife.
She was chiefly educated at the London Oratory School, a Catholic school in Chelsea where she did a common academic curriculum focusing on English Language and Literature, Catholic scripture and the Latin language, the Sciences (predominantly physics) as well as learning the French language. Although they were non-examined classes, she also studied athletics (she particularly enjoyed tennis and fencing) and drama classes. She did well enough to earn her Higher School Certificate, but not enough to pursue to University; although she will point out 80% of people did not progress further than her level at the time, especially women and considering the subjects and employment opportunities available for women back then.
As she entered her teens, however, a combination of working on vehicles with her father, learning to drive, and her physics classes led to her developing a love for automobiles. It wasn't long before she was, at first assisting, then later directly competing in racing at the Brooklands motor-racing circuit. She was good, but unfortunately, the RAC did not allow professional women races back then, or she might have competed professionally and made a career out of it. Or maybe not, as soon after graduating from school, the Second World War broke out.
Wanting to do her bit for the war effort, she enlisted with the Women's Royal Naval Service (the WRNS, commonly known as the Wrens) which were recruiting women. Although she wanted to be a driver, because of her mechanical and racing skills she was instead made a Third Officer despatch driver (service number 7260) and given further training in motorcycles, especially evasion and repair techniques. Although she had raced and driven many types of cars and vehicles, and a few motorcycles, motorcycles of the speed and power like the Triumph motorcycle she principally used (RN 8101), were relatively unfamiliar to her; but she found herself really enjoying using them, as well as the thrill of the danger of her job. She served well and with distinction, earning a British Empire Medal for bravery when, one night during the Blitz, she was to take an urgent despatch to Plymouth. The journey was long, cold and arduous, full of obstructions, debris, explosions and anti-aircraft gunfire. As Hayley neared her destination, a bomb fell nearby, throwing her off her motorcycle. Although she was not seriously hurt, her bike was mangled and beyond immediate repair, so she ran the final mile to deliver her despatch papers. Then, once they were delivered, she requested a new bike so she could go back out and carry on working.
Ironically, the war would bring her happiness in the form of Hugh Carter, an American USAF pilot who had volunteered and been transferred to the RAF's 609 Squadron to aid in what would become known as the Battle of Britain. Although he was polite and respectful in his own way, Hugh had a mischievous and cheeky manner that was uncommon with the typically more-reserved British, which appealed to Hayley's own mischievous personality. A couple of months later they were courting, and a few years later, in 1944, were married.
Despite Wren despatch drivers accounting for a third of the Wren war deaths due to the dangers of their job during the blitz, and the risks of active combat pilots like Hugh, both of them, fortunately, came out of the war intact. Shortly after the war Hayley and Hugh moved to America, obtaining a small home in the outskirts of Los Angeles with a large field suitable for accommodating the use of a small biplane. Hugh worked as a crop-duster pilot and flight instructor and Haley helped him with the administration and mechanics side of things; even learning how to pilot herself. Hugh introduced Hayley to his passion for flying, and Hayley introduced him to her passion for motorcycles. Hayley even became a member of both the Motor Maids female motorcycling association, as well as a member of the 99's organisation of female pilots. Riding together on motorcycles through the state highways and flying together would be a passion they would enjoy together and often. At least, until Haley gave birth to a daughter, Evelynn (named after her grandmother), a few years later. This would be the happiest period of Hayley's life.
But then tragedy struck. Unbeknownst to then-mortal Hayley, Los Angeles was a Camarilla domain which had undergone the Second Anarch Revolt in 1944, with Los Angeles becoming the first of the Anarch Free States. A period of chaos followed this, with both the Camarilla and Sabbat sending infiltrators to probe for weakness in the new Barony.
A Sabbat "war party" used the common Sabbat tactic of creating "shovelheads" - mass-embraced "drafted" cannon-fodder that could be thrown at the enemy with little care for their low-chance of survival - and Hayley's home was unfortunately randomly targeted for recruitment. The pack invaded their home as they were having dinner, overpowering Hugh and Hayley with ease. The couple were then dragged out to their garden, forced to dig open graves, then had the Embrace forced on them. As they transitioned to unlife, they were bashed over the head with a shovel, thrown into the graves and buried. Hayley awoke underground and nearly lost her humanity in the combined sheer terror of being "buried alive," an inability to feel her heart beating, or natural breathing, tears of blood, and the strange hallucinatory visions of the Embrace; but somehow she not only succeeded in pulling herself out of the ground but managed to retain her humanity, although lost and bestial to her first frenzy.
As "a reward for being first" she was presented with what she could only acknowledge as a source of vitae. It was only after her frenzy and bloodlust subsided that Hayley realised she had been made to devour her infant daughter. Realising the Sabbat would eliminate her if she showed the turmoil in her heart, she bit her lip and said the first monstrous thing that occurred to her, which would haunt her thereafter: "Tasty." After Hugh pulled himself out, the pack took them out on their first hunt and made them bring home their neighbours - an elderly couple. Deciding they were too old to embrace (although some of the pack claimed "it would be funny"), the pack hung them upside down in their living room and cut them so they would bleed slowly, like a beer barrel for the pack. The true horror, however, was seeing Hugh had lost his humanity and become a monster, revelling in the blood and seemingly little grief over Evelynn's death.
As the dawn approached Hayley realised that the pack members became victim to the day-sleep more pronouncedly than she did (due to her humanity) and, although it cost her a great effort of will, she only pretended to go into daysleep whilst forcing herself to remain awake until all the pack members were asleep. She then poured motor oil over the area, chained the door shut from the outside, set the oil on fire, and crawled into her neighbours' cellar as the first rays of the dawn sun seared her flesh. She fell into her first daysleep torpor to the sounds of the Sabbat's screams. Those that somehow escaped the fiery conflagration were met by the sun. Although she did not know if any would survive and murder her, she drifted to sleep grinning with the cold comfort of having avenged her daughter and her husband, who she considers to have died during the embrace, and not in the fire she started.
Hayley was fortunate that she was discovered by ghouls that arrived with the firefighters. The ghouls bound her and secreted her out of the area whilst she slept to protect the Masquerade, and she was taken to their masters. She awoke the following evening surrounded by a group of Anarchs, who interrogated her about the fire and her Embrace. Having nothing but hatred for the Sabbat, she defiantly told them what she had done and why, not understanding that these were Anarchs and enemies of the Sabbat; she believed they were "more vampires" and would murder her for her actions, but did not care.
The anarchs actually took pity on her, and the Baron was even grateful that she had eliminated a Sabbat pack that had been causing problems for them during a fragile time. The Anarchs taught her the rudiments of kindred society, enough for Hayley to understand the difference between the main sects and that California was a battleground between the Camarilla, the Sabbat, and this new "Anarch Movement" faction. They even offered her the chance to stay, as many kindred were flocking to the new Barony to escape the stifling Camarilla territories. Though grateful, Hayley realised she could not stay in Los Angeles - it was too painful. Her life was over, and she had died along with Evelynn and Hugh. She was now in a new unlife, and needed to make a new start.
So she used the last of her mortal went back to her home one last time to steal her own Triumph motorcycle (she feared the consequences of mortals discovering she had not died in the fire, as it would be hard to explain why she would not have been in the house, without making her look the arsonist - which, technically, she was). She took the name Evelynn to honour her daughter (shortened to "Eve" amongst friends and more commonly in the modern nights), along with the surname Wren as a way to spite the Sabbat. They had wanted to destroy her humanity and connection to her mortal life, so she would pick a name that was a constant reminder about her mortal life - and would help turn the painful memories into more bittersweet ones, and serve as an anchor for her humanity.
Over time she made friends (and enemies) along the way, and would semi-settle in the Camarilla city of Ashford, although she would travel a lot around California and other states - though she would find this dangerous as kindred domains were very mistrusting or hostile towards new and nomadic kindred. She was upset when the Gangrel clan left the Camarilla, although it had its benefits. Being officially independent meant that, despite many Camarilla kindred now treating her with distrust, others took advantage of her clan's independence to employ her, including both Camarilla and Anarchs, especially when they needed a neutral in-between. She even occasionally would act as a liason between these and the Sabbat, typically employed by the Camarilla/Anarchs to deliver messages, or secretly using her contacts and City Gangrel blood to act as a spy within the Sabbat.
When the Sabbat launched their 2016 crusade, Cindy Walker would get the credit for making the call-to-arms for those Gangrel who supported the Camarilla to join and fight against the Sabbat. But it was Eve who convinced Cindy to make the call. In the aftermath of the Crusade, Eve enjoys new-found respect and official recognition of membership in the Camarilla and has made Ashford her permanent home. Whilst she has refused an actual position as one of the Sheriff's hounds, she respects the new Sheriff and often helps him out, couriers important information for him, or spies for him in Sabbat territory. She has even formed a coterie of sorts with Lilah Fox and Morena Arjona that is tongue-in-cheekily named the Midnight Motors.
Despite being comfortable in Ashford, the thrill and freedom of flying a plane (or helicopter, which she has since learnt how to operate), or the lure of the open road still makes her leave frequently on many, typically dangerous, courier, scouting and espionage jobs.
Mortal Society
Eve works as an independent courier using her official ID of Evelynn Wren which, although she has used the name since shortly after her Embrace, has only recently been created as a legal ID by Kindred contacts - and her previously nomadic lifestyle means that there are few mortals to have dealt with her enough to have noticed her lack of ageing.
Evelynn is registered as a 26-year-old Londoner with dual UK-US citizenship and a freelance security specialist. Although she does take mundane jobs from courier agencies such as UPS and FedEx, typically for routes out of their normal patterns when hiring an independent is more cost-effective than diverting mainstream resources, she is mostly employed to courier high-value things, where there is an element of risk. Jewellery, important documentation, court evidence and the likes are the typical things she is entrusted to deliver - in the knowledge that she is reliable, efficient, and capable of defending herself and getting out of trouble if others attempt to acquire or prevent her delivering whatever she is couriering.
Outside her mortal employment, Eve interacts little with mortals beyond casual entertainment, typically bikers and truckers at the Rusty Forks Saloon or with members of the Motor Maids or the 99s - associations that serve to entertain and build useful allies and contacts, yet can be kept at arm's length as casual acquaintances. She has built up enough friends amongst bikers to have a reliable herd, but she usually prefers not to rely on them for this as she believes in keeping her skills sharp by hunting for vitae rather than becoming complacent and reliant on a herd. Despite this, most mortals who interact with her would believe Eve is a friendly, witty and mischievous person who is quick to laugh, play pranks on people, dance, tell (usually dirty) jokes and talk about motorcycles, cars or planes all night long; and always up for a quick drive (especially as these often end with the mortal becoming her evening meal).
Personality
Eve likes to believe that she's a decent person and struggles to hold on to her humanity; acting humanely and trying to avoid killing whenever possible, but she knows she's slipped a bit (the events around her Embrace certainly hardened her). She enjoys being a part of a (kindred) community and doing her duty for her perceived side - just as she did during her mortal days. But she's also smart enough to know that, as kindred, she's a monster at heart and it's only her will that keeps the monster from being unleashed. The times that she frenzies and sees the beast in her reflection (due to her clan's weakness of developing bestial features when they frenzy) constantly reminds her of this fact. So she lives an illusion of humanity and hopes it keeps the beast at bay.
Eve knows the Camarilla isn't exactly a mortal-friendly institution - the kindred use and abuse mortals at their whim, and it has a lot of corruption and political infighting, but she saw those elements even amongst the kine during her mortal days and accepts it; especially as kindred politics is usually only a problem for those wanting to move up the Ivory Tower ladder - which she does not. But she's seen the alternatives... For all their sins, at least the Camarilla respects what humanity is, treads carefully around them, and appreciates the need to keep the Masquerade and an ordered structure for the good of all Kindred. The Sabbat, however, are (to her mind) just bloodthirsty and fanatical monsters who willingly discard any pretence of humanity or morality, and only act on their own debased self-interests, and are the true monsters of legend that mortal horror movies about vampires make them out to be. She believes that the Anarchs mean well ideologically and sympathises with their cause to a degree, but thinks that there needs to be some kind of ordered system, or else things break down and it becomes dog-eat-dog. She has been in enough Anarch Free State domains to see that, ultimately, Anarch Baronies are not as dissimilar as Camarilla ones, except that personal power and charisma keeps the Barons on top, rather than political power and alliances like in the Camarilla.
But that's about as political as Eve will get, as she dislikes politics (even during her mortal days) and just wants to enjoy her unlife. Ironically, a sentiment not dissimilar to that of the Anarchs or Sabbat, except she has more respect for humanity and kindred society. Some even say Eve has a death wish... she's actually even wondered that herself, admitting that nothing makes her feel more alive than when she is driving a motorcycle or car at speeds that could endanger even her unlife, or flying a plane or helicopter through the open skies or barnstorming through Death Valley.
Other Notes
Eve first learnt to drive cars and motorcycles with her father as she grew up, then actively got into car racing before being professionally trained to drive motorcycles at high speed during dangerous environments. Unsurprisingly, she is particularly good with both vehicles, with a stated preference for motorcycles.
But what often comes as a surprise to others is that Eve is also a capable pilot. Introduced to piloting by her mortal husband, she initially learnt to pilot single-propeller biplanes, then slowly moved up the ladder as time went by, even after her embrace. She is capable of piloting most things and her mortal identity holds the following FAA pilot licensure:
- Private Pilot License (PPL) - certified to fly most single-engine aeroplanes and aircraft, including helicopters.
- Commercial Pilot License (CPL) - certified to be paid for pilot services, such as when taking a courier job which involves flying a private plane to a different state or country.
- Commercial Multi-Engine Land (CMEL) - An extension to the PPL and CPL, certifying her to fly twin-engine aircraft, such as a Learjet. This is most commonly used when she is couriering VIPs in comfort.
- Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) - Certified to be able to teEve has used this on occasion to give private flight lessons, typically to other Kindred who may have trouble getting lessons purely at night without raising suspicion.
She is not certified to fly large commercial airliners or military-grade aircraft, or to instruct in multi-engines (though she certainly could).
Now that she has made Ashford her permanent base, Eve has been considering accepting Lilah Fox's offer of leasing some of her unused domain and setting up a small helicopter business, doing flights and tutorials - but she is unsure if she wants to be so tied down; the instinct to be able to be able to just get up and leave in an instant is too strong in her.
Combat Style
Those who know Eve is a Gangrel would expect her to rely on the infamous Gangrel Protean claws and Fortitude Discipline to be deadly in combat but, as a City Gangel, Eve has had to learn Fortitude as an outsider. She does have the ability to grow claws or take an animal form which can grant her a bite attack, and she has both been in plenty of fights and trained with Lilah Fox, to be a competent and experienced melee-fighter. Melee is usually her choice when there is no alternative, however.
Having being raised with an active childhood as well as a rider and pilot during her mortal days, Eve was naturally dextrous before even entering unlife. She has learnt to use her natural attributes along with her clan's Celerity Discipline to good effect. Her primary method of combat is using firearms. At almost any time she always has her compact Glock 27 G4 pistol on her - as it's small enough to conceal in a pocket, handbag or similar location, yet has reasonable stopping power. This is her preferred backup weapon but often thought as her primary weapon as it would be with her during any surprise attack. When anticipating the possibility of a fight, she would rely on her Kel-Tec CNC KSG short-barrel shotgun, typically employing solid slugs rather than buckshot, which can cause pause to even Kindred or Lupines. If expecting Lupine problems (such as when taking a job that requires passing through their territory), she usually has some silver bullets or pellets cartridges on-hand. She is experienced and competent with these firearms.
In an emergency, or if in a situation where extending her Protean claws may be unsuitable (such as fighting mortals with intention of preserving the Masquerade and not killing) Eve usually keeps a survival knife on her. As this is typically used only in situations where she cannot use her claws or firearms, she lacks experience in knife-fighting but is still competent due to applying techniques learnt during the fencing lessons of her mortal youth.
Although she relies on her agility and Celerity to avoid taking direct damage, she has developed some ability with the Fortitude discipline and typically is found wearing her BulletBlocker NIJ IIIA bulletproof leather jacket, which together give her more ability to take punishment that might be expected by a casual attacker - though not enough to rely on against serious threats, such as Lupines. She relies on her ability to soak damage to buy time for her to escape or take out the threat.
As Eve is familiar with the Obsuscate Discipline, she can be a surprisingly deadly tactician - remaining concealed until she strikes and able to become hard to track or possibly disappear during fights, depending on how strong the will of her opponents are.
Social Style
Eve is easy to get along with. Raised in Britain during an era of civility, she is naturally polite and respectful (it has been noted that she has the classic British sarcasm and wit, and is more likely to be passive-aggressive when irate than outwardly rude and hostile). Whilst she can be mischievous, she has no patience for politics or manipulation and finds it, or rather, people who are that way inclined, frustrating.
Straight-up directness and honesty with her work well. She would much prefer someone employ her for a job and inform her that they have no idea how much trouble it'll be, but to expect it; than to be fed a white lie that causes problems. She does not mind danger but wants to know what she's getting into. People who are honest about this find her very willing to keep aiding them and loyal, even if they keep getting her into precarious situations. Those who deceive, manipulate or omit things, get her naturally defensive and mistrustful. Which is probably why she generally does not get along well with most Ventrue, Toreadors and Tremere (she's never met a Giovanni, but thinks she likely wouldn't get along well with them either), although there are exceptions (Eve is good friends with "Mo", a Toreador mechanic and coterie-mate. She respects, but frequently argues with the knuckleheaded Brujah, but thinks they have much in common, and also considers fellow coterie member (and unofficial leader) Lilah Fox to be a friend.
She enjoys jokes and enjoying life, so those people (kindred or kine) who have a carefree, bon-vivant attitude are likely to be found appreciable company.
But she's a Gangrel, however much she may say she differs - and she's been burnt and lost people she cares about - so at heart she is quick to laugh and get along with people, but slow to trust and let others in. The natural nomadic, solitary hunter/survivor in her wants her to reject ties and closeness, so those who want to develop this will need to be extremely patient. Eve is almost sociopathic in her ability to be able to suddenly turn away from friends and sever all connections in an instant if there is a need (such as for the Masquerade).
