Appearance
Edelweiss is a natural beauty, and she knows it, and therefore works hard to maximise her sex appeal, considering it as important as a Hellvetic maintaining his weapon. She has long, naturally near-black hair and striking blue-grey eyes. She accentuates her natural beauty with perfectly-applied cosmetics, and usually wears a leather corset which not only accentuates her voluptuous figure, but is also hardened and reinforced in key areas to provide some protection. She has several tattoos, the most notable being "the apocalypse bride" on her right arm, her cult symbol on the back of her neck, and a magpie in an area that only her clients and lovers get to see. She has several piercings, including her upper ear, nose, and navel. She is fond of hats and the colour red, and her fashion style usually reflects this.
Background
Edelweiss ("Edel" to her friends) knows that she was born and lived her early years somewhere in Franka, although she does not know where; or who her parents where - and it does not matter any more. Whoever and wherever she was, Edelweiss was taken by a Stork at an early age and raised by the Dust Riders Flock. She was given the name Edelweiss (after the flower that grows in the Alps) by the Woodpecker because of her sweet looks. Although, like all Apocalyptics, her time as a Finch was rough she quickly found herself having the natural aptitude to become, and enjoy being a Magpie at a relatively early age. Using her looks and quickly-developed sexual wiles to avoid beatings, make allies and protectors and, eventually, earn her place in the Dust Riders.
Since then Edelweiss works hard for both her own personal gratification and the good of the Dust Riders, and has become one of the most sought-after (and expensive) girls at the Flotsam, the bordello and casino the Dust Riders maintain in Justician. She knows the larger Carrion Crows Flock dominates the "shadier" underworld in Justician, and likes to think that the Dust Riders are "not as bad" as (at least in the Flotsam) they do not traffic in Burn and have restraint in their activities - and so forth neither the Anabaptists, Judges or Spitalians have had cause to act against them... indeed it is their quasi-support which may have helped protect them from the anger of the Carrion Crows' leader, Dejan the Raven, who is desperate to recover Flotsam from the Dust Riders and avenge himself on their leader, Vulco, who stole it from him.
Personality
Edelweiss lives a pure and unbridled life. All emotions are sacred to her and equally celebrated as if it were her last. Thus she tends to do things to extreme, indulging and enjoying happiness, lust and anger in equal measure. She occasionally has indulged herself in wallowing in sadness when a situation has deserved it, but normally this is overcome with a stronger and "more useful" emotion. She dances when she feels like it; takes lovers on a whim; and destroys those that anger her with equal glee. Many have underestimated "the pretty whore" and found themselves being utterly crushed by her. On the whole, however, she is considered by most to be the poster-child for the Apocalyptics and is beautiful, gracious and friendly, the consummate hostess at Flotsam, and always willing to lend an ear to those who need it.
Other Notes
Flotsam
Justitian’s old harbour. The colossus’ bulk is wedged deeply in the petrified silt. The Carrion Birds took over the ship decades ago, turned it into a casino and bordello, called it “Flotsam” and lost it to the Dust Riders Flock, a humiliation the Mother of Ravens has not yet forgotten. Bridges upon which punters, gamblers, or the simply curious mill about at sundown span the gap of more than 20 feet between quay wall and upper deck. The chains of lights come alive with a flicker and make the superstructure blink colourfully. Apocalyptics open up the gates, and the people enter the ship’s belly. Pulsing bass frequencies blast from speakers, merging with violin and synth notes to a song of love and passion, possession and release, from a time when the Bygones were still at their heyday. Magpies sneak, hookahs smoulder, the crowd dances, sweats and stomps. African seeds are chewed. At gambling tables, gamblers lean over Kalaha or slap cards onto the tabletops; others wager sheaves of Chronicler Drafts on the wheel of fortune. Those who dare agree to an exhibition bout against a Battle Crow – 20 drafts in cash if they hang on for three rounds. The crowd cheers, bets against the man and wins. In the Flotsam, life is gaudy, loud, and unruly. For many, it’s a haven to forget the daily grind. The Judges exercise restraint. People who know how to blow off their steam do not rebel.
Combat Style
People often underestimate Edelweiss. As she is a Magpie, and dresses glamorously, they assume she is all show and that her only real clout is socially. This may be her chosen battlefield, but she is an Apocalyptic and when needed can stand alongside a Battle Crow - although she normally only resorts to violence for self-defence, the defence of her Flock, or when angered. If moved to violence, they discover that she may not be as physically tough as a Battle Crow, but she is in good physical shape and quite athletic, and just as capable with knives. Her fighting style is unorthodox and unpredictable, making it hard for her opponents to anticipate her actions.
Social Style
Edelweiss is often described as being somewhat mercurial. When she is "on the prowl" (as others have said) she adapts her social style and tolerance levels to a great degree to match the needs of the situation (ie what helps best achieve her goals) but when the reverse situation is true those courting her favour would do well to note what her current mood is. Respecting and encouraging her moods will get into her good graces, whilst attempts to change her mood are taken negatively (unless it prevents her doing something she would later seriously regret, and turns the negative situation into a positive for her). Treating her "like a criminal" or "a whore" (although even Apocalyptics would state that is what Magpies like her actually are) is a good way to earn her ire. She generally gets along well with Chroniclers and Scrappers, but cultural issues usually prevent her getting allies amongst the Jehammedans and Judges.
