Albrekt (Degenesis)

Chronicler Personality Profile Record

Appearance

Spitalians - Albrekt.jpg

Albrekt is deceptive looking. He doesn't quite reach even female average height, and is relatively skinny. Despite this, his Spitalian nomex suit's style, the various things he usually has clipped onto himself, and his good physique make him seem bigger than he actually is. Under the nomex suit is the figure of someone who has had a tough upbringing and a disciplined mind, who has worked hard to get into (and remain in) good shape.

Like most Spitalians, Albrekt is usually seen to be hairless, or with very short hair. Every time he returns to the Spital the cleansing process requires his hair to be shaved off and his head properly calcified, and so often will seem reddened from the process. When he's been out in the field for a while, his hair grows back - he willingly allows this rather than regularly head-shaving like other Spitalians - but inevitably will be lost the next time he returns to the Spital.

Albrekt's good physique, friendly smile and strong brown eyes make him usually considered to be good looking by those with the inclination to do so. Albrekt seems unaware of this, and would likely be embarrassed if anyone mentioned it to him.

Background

Albrekt was born in a village north of Laibach in northern Balkhan, which became embroiled in war when two leading families went to war over some slight that Albrekt cannot even recall, which had little or nothing to do with them directly, which resulted in the 'honorable' death of his father who had been given the choice of dying honorably fighting for some lord, or being executed for cowardice if he refused to fight.

Embittered by Balkhan politics, which eventually also stole her eldest son from her, Albrekt's mother took them north to Borca, where they eventually settled in a village near the Praha Republika. There they lived fairly comfortably for until tragedy struck once again when a small group of burn-addicts in their village became infected and spread the spore infection; eventually leading to mass infections and enough leperos to not only endanger the population, but attract the attention of the Spitalians; who purged a large section of the village in purifying flame.

Whilst some may harbour resentment towards the Spitalians for this apparent callousness, Albrekt knows the true blame fell with the Burn suppliers and the addicts. It sparked off something inside him and with determination and hard work, in time, was accepted into the Spital for training. There he drove himself to succeed, at the cost of neglecting social contact with even other trainees, but excelled in his studies and became a Famulancer.

Since then Albrekt has been making a name for himself and earning renown for his willingness to help others, protect those in need, and determination in fighting the Primer.

Personality

Albrekt is a naturally determined person, and this tends to drive his personality and actions. Whilst his background may cause like others to become bitter or selfish, in Albrekt it has only served to make him grateful for who and where he is, and desire to help others who need help. Albrekt is dedicated to fighting The Primer and some may say he's almost too obsessive about it - but Albrekt will simply respond that the Primer does not rest, and that all that has to happen for the Primer to win is for people to do nothing. He knows that fighting the Primer is a fight on multiple fronts - requiring both intellectual capacity to understand science and medicine in order to fight Spore infections, and physical capability fight Leperos, Pheromancers or other threats. He is determined to what what he can to help the cause.

Despite this apparent grim resolve, Albrekt is generally thought of as kind-hearted and friendly, if lacking in social graces. He is quick to help those in need, medically or otherwise. He hates seeing others suffer and desires to help when possible, especially against aggressors and abusers - something which seems to quickly set off some primordial spark in him. He enjoys the arts and poetry (though himself has absolutely no artistic talent), enjoys the company of others and a good joke; although is as witty as a hungry Gendo and lacks the social self-confidence to step into the foreground in social situations. To those that take the time to get to know him, he has proven to be a very loyal and good friend. Unfortunately for Albrekt, his determination and tendency to "prioritise" means that to date his prioritisation of his medical studies and physical training mean that his social skills are underdeveloped due to a lack of social contact, and a commensurate lack of friends. He is well respected by those who know of him, but few actually know him.

Other Notes

Albrekt will deny it if asked, but many have accused him of being prejudiced against Apocalyptics. When it is required, he will be courteous to them, but rarely his usual pleasant self. Whilst it is common for Spitalians (who fight spore infection) to not get along with Apocalyptics (who peddle the Burn drug, that often causes infections), Albrekt seems to have a stronger, more personal dislike than most.

Combat Style

Albrekt is a trained Famulancer, so it comes as no surprise to anyone that his melee style revolves around the trained use of his Splayer polearm. Albrekt is well trained - for a Famulancer - and has a strong physique and so is capable of holding his own against typical threats, although he is no Preservist. What may come as a surprise to those not in the know is that Albrekt is at least as equally capable, if not moreso, with his fists. He attributes this to a youth of living in a politically volatile climate, and long periods of living as a refugee - periods of his life where the ability to stand up, take a beating and dish it back were essential for survival.

As such Albrekt relies on his toughness and melee skills in combat. He is unafraid to tackle danger head-on with his splayer, or his fists is he wants to avoid bloodshed. He is agile enough to be able to evade the worst blows, and tough enough to generally whether what he cannot avoid. Although this being said, he has yet to tackle a Pheromancer or similar creature, and thus far has only faced cultists, clanners and the occasional leperos.

Albrekt carries a fungicide rifle and is considered responsible enough by his cult to be able to draw on the Fire Dust agent from the Spital's arsenal. This means that he is capable of turning his fungicide rifle into a deadly flamethrower. He is acutely aware that resources are costly, however, and prefers not to depend on this unless he considers the threat being faced to be severe enough to warrant it.

Social Style

Albrekt is considered quite easy to get along with as long as anyone is not hostile towards him as he is naturally patient and polite, although it can take him a while to let people in (or get to know them). He appears to detest Burn dealers and users, considering them to be reckless at best, selfish and nihilistic at worst; and those that prey on those weaker than them also quickly gain his ire.

As such, Albrekt naturally gravitates to people that oppose this - those with compassion, honesty and a sense of responsibility will find it easier to gain his trust. He values people with intellectual interests, especially those willing to share their knowledge and discuss with others. He dislikes people who withhold knowledge willingly, believing that they choose to be selfish for their own benefit, when all of mankind could instead prosper. Knowledge, he believes, may be one of the crucial factors required to defeat the Primer, and something towards which all should endeavour to work together.
