Appearance

Assamite - Abdel-Fattah 1.jpg

Abdel represents himself as a relatively unimposing man, mostly by design. He is of average height and obvious middle-eastern ethnicity and, during his mortal days, was olive-skinned but due to the curse of the darkening is now ebony-skinned. He relies on the use of Obfuscate to appear to others with his original complexion, both to prevent unwanted attention from the kine (as skin that dark is unusual even amongst African tribes) and to not have his elder status thrust before all kindred eyes. During most of his mortal life he had long hair and a moustache (as, despite being Muslim, the Jannisaries were not allowed to keep a beard, only a moustache) but was allowed by his sire to grow it into a light beard appropriate for a Muslim, before being Embraced. Most of the time, he cuts his hair short, styled into various forms depending on his moods but generally shaved along the sides and medium-length at the top in some form.

He tends to dress casually to aid in blending in, with clothing common for the area and in large chains. He only makes the effort to dress more elegantly when there is a reason, such as Elysium etiquette or carrying out an assassination requiring infiltration, whereby formal clothing would aid. In these cases, he will wear clothing appropriate to the event - typically common brands, as he does not even remotely attempt to follow fashion trends, and would not want to attract attention anyhow.

Background

Abdel-Fattah was born in a Cairo to a Coptic Orthodox Christian family of merchants and raised religiously and well educated for the time. Although he was made to learn Arabic by the ruling regime, his father secretly taught him Coptic Egyptian to best understand the Coptic liturgy, and Greek and Latin both to understand Coptic Egyptian as well as for trading with Byzantine Empire traders. He had a good upbringing but clashed regularly with some of the Arab children because of his family's faith. On a fateful day, one such clash led to him getting into a fight with two older Arab boys. Although bloodied, he stood victorious - but had attracted the attention of an Ottoman scout who was purchasing supplies and witnessed the brawl. Although it was rare in Egypt, especially in large cities as rural children were considered tougher than urban children, when the scout learnt that Abdel-Fattah was a Christian and "the ideal age", he was recruitedas as acemi oğlan (foreign boy) under the devshirme system. Abdel-Fattah was taken from his family as a slave soldier and transported to Constantinople whereby, upon arrival, was force-converted to Islam, examined, and trained to serve the empire. He then served for seven years as a Türk Oğlan, a glorified farmhand in the estate of esteemed Turkish families. Following this, he was sent to the Acemi Ocak for advanced military drills and weapons handling to join the elite janissaries. He excelled in training, covering a variety of weapons including bows, muskets, javelins, axes, halberds, and the signature kilijs and yatagan swords.

After his training he was the consumate soldier. He went where they sent him and killed who they told him to, and he was good at it. Sometimes, it bothered him when his fellow janissaries looked at him like a monster, but that was their weakness, not his. He fought in various conflicts, and in 1621 was part of the janissaries force that fought in the Battle of Khotyn. Although the Janissaries fought well, it was not the victory Sultan Osman II desired. Unsatisfied, Osman blamed the janissaries and tried to disband them, but the Janissaries heard rumours above his plans and revolted, capturing the Sultan and imprisoning him in the notorious Seven Towers fortress. Angered by the Sultan's attempt to disband them, which Abdel-Fattah saw as the Sultan betraying the life Abdel-Fattah had been stolen and converted for, shortly afterwards Abdel-Fattah murdered the 17 year old Sultan.

This deed did not go unnoticed. Several nights later Abdel-Fattah was relaxing in his bunk when he became suddenly aware of a dark-skinned stranger standing there, holding Abdel-Fattah's own Yatagan sword. Without even introducing himself, the stranger spat in Abdel-Fattah's face and tossed him the sword. Although Abdel-Fattah was armed and he was not, the stranger still beat him senseless. Despite that, he still smiled at Abdel-Fattah and said he had potential. Then he showed Abdel-Fattah his fangs and asked him if he wanted to be a killer or a victim. Abdel-Fattah never hesitated. He never will.
