Appearance
Gideon embodies the classic "southern gentleman" from pop culture. He always wears smart suits that give him good presence, but not from high-fashion makes. They're as functional as they are elegant, but not to the degree (or expense) a Ventrue might. It is common to see him with a hat of some description, typically a cowboy hat reflecting his Texan roots.
He was in good physical shape during his mortal days and, although embraced in his 50s, still looks in better physical shape than most men half his physical age. His default expression is a cross between a grimace and a scowl, leading him to look disapproving most of the time, although those that know him say he is quick to smile and joke. Despite his attire and his line of work, his hands are calloused and rough, indicators that he spent much of his mortal life doing labour work which likely led to his enduring physique. He is usually seen clean-shaven but awakens nightly with the trimmed beard popular in the American south during his mortal days, well-groomed permanently as it was when he was embraced, with more grey than colour.
In Elysium, he has been known to appear wearing a Confederacy Officer's parade dress uniform from the Civil War period, and those with the knowledge (or who ask) will recognise the blue Austrian knots and collar insignia for a Confederate army infantry Major. This is usually accompanied by a genuine Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword and Colt 1851 Navy revolver used by Confederate officers during the civil war.
Background
Prelude
Gideon came from humble origins but exemplifies the combination of willingness to work hard and persevere with your ambitions. Although his mother was with child when his Anglo-American family settled in the area to set up a small cotton plantation near what would become Independence, Texas, Gideon was born shortly after they arrived.
His father had amounted debts in order to relocate the family from Austin and finance the equipment, resources and workers to work the fields, and the yield was growing too slowly. The frequent political and cultural clashes with the soldiers of the Mexican government soldiers that controlled the area meant that development was slow and so they were frequently in debt. As such Gideon had to do more hard work than most larger plantation owners and family members in other areas would have done, growing up helping plant and plow in the spring, harvest in the fall; and allowed to attend school during the summer and winter, unless his father needed him - which he frequently did. He credits this with making him the man he became.
Then in 1835, the same year that what would become the town of Independence was founded near their plantation, Texians and volunteers from the United States attacked the small garrisons of Mexican soldiers beginning what would be known as the Texas Revolution. Although not initially involved, his father participated in the revolution in 1836 after the declaration of independence and formation of the new Republic of Texas, leaving Gideon's elder brother in charge, as Gideon was only 14 at the time. History would recall the repercussions, with General Santa Anna leading a force to avenge Mexico's honour that would famously defeat the Texian garrison in the Battle of the Alamo, killing almost all the defenders - which included Gideon's father. The subsequent rush of Texians flooding to join General Sam Houston's army included Gideon's big brother, with Gideon and his family having to evacuate the plantation and follow Houston's army for fear of Santa Anna's encroaching army. Fortunately, the Texians would win out in the famous Battle of San Jacinto, gaining the new Republic of Texas de facto independence from Mexico, and allowing Gideon and his family returned to the plantation for a few years of peace and prosperity.
Although not a natural genius, Gideon was a smart lad and a hard worker. Having only a few months of the year to attend school, he needed to work harder during those times and on his own at home in order to succeed. Even prior to the revolution his family lacked the money to purchase many books to aid his education, so Gideon took to reading the papers from the various newspaper companies in Texas. He found this to be one of the best ways for him to both improve his literacy, as well as keep up with the developing events in Texas prior to and including the Texas Revolution. He became highly respectful of newspapers and the value of their sharing of information. Despite his family's struggling plantation and the forced war-relocation setting his already-empoverished family's plantation back even further, Gideon worked hard and read a lot, and was awarded a Reward of Merit for his educational efforts.
But it would appear that Gideon's lot would be to work in the family plantation, now finally beginning to prosper in the post-war peace and growth of Independence, which was rapidly becoming the wealthiest community in Texas. In 1845, at 23 years of age, however, Baylor University was established in Independence, offering "the Science of Law" for reasonable rates. Despite his elder brother's objections, Gideon was accepted into the new University. In order to coerce him to remain at the plantation, Gideon's brother Atticus cut him off financially - refusing to pay for Gideon's university costs in an attempt to financially force him to abandon his plans. Always strong-willed and willing to do whatever it took to achieve his goals, Gideon instead managed to secure a job in a local print firm that produced a local newspaper.
His plans were disrupted, however, when Texas being annexed as the 28th state of the United States of America in 1845 quickly led to the 1846 Mexican-American War. Too young to have signed up during the Texas Revolution, but with an unsettled desire to avenge his father's death at the Alamo, Gideon signed up. Gideon's upbringing on the plantation and many hours spent training with rifles and pistols with his father and brother growing up, served him well. Although the war only lasted a few years, he served with pride and felt that he had done what he needed to avenge his father. He served predominantly in the California campaign (a war that, unbeknownst to him, would enable the Camarilla to begin taking territory away from the Sabbat, whose stronghold was in Mexico).
Returning to Independence and Baylor University, Gideon finished his legal degree - now funded by the savings from his army salary as well as, due to the popularity of news about the Mexican-American war with the US populace, an agreement to a series of interviews and to write a series of articles about the war for the print company he had previously worked at; which would become his first proper steps into journalism. Although this would not have been sufficient to finance the rest of the course as well as his living costs, his participation in the war and the articles also had the unexpected benefit of getting his brother Atticus' respect and a negotiated stipend from the now-prosperous family plantation. It was agreed, in return, that Gideon would be Atticus' lawyer and aid in managing the financial and legal aspects of the plantation - something that Atticus had always struggled with. An arrangement that suited both men - keeping Gideon within the "family business" in an extended way, whilst giving Gideon the freedom (and financing) to pursue his law career. Whilst working for the newspaper meets Dottie Bluford, a secretary at the newspaper with ambitions of being a writer, who he begins courting.
After graduating from Baylor and being admitted to the bar in 1851, Gideon sets up his own law practice in Independence, then marries Dottie now that he is respectfully educated and has his own business. Whilst he enjoyed the life of a lawyer - especially fighting for those causes he believed in, he found himself ever-interested in the news and politics as a whole. Whilst he had no interest in getting personally involved in politics, he enjoyed reading about it, especially as regards its effect on current affairs and the community, and conversing about it in social situations and doing what he could to support causes he believed in (or fight against those he was against). In 1852 the town of Independence was incorporated and soon had a thriving commercial centre and, with it, his law career prospered and his wife gave birth to their daughter, Cora, although complications during childbirth rendered it impossible for her to have further children. His occasional opinion pieces to the newspapers even led to a regular column in the local newspaper discussing political and legal issues.
The 50s became a difficult time, however, with issues such as nationalism and honour, states' rights, and slavery being frequent hot topics. Gideon was infuriated that the Union wanted to force their beliefs on the South, and frequently wrote about the issues. But it all ultimately exploded in 1861 when the Civil War broke out. Although both he and Atticus were above the age range of the draft, Gideon immediately enlisted with the Provisional Confederate States Army and, due to his education, status and prior military service was commissioned as a Captain and placed in the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment. Although Atticus did not sign up, his children (Gideon's nephews) were both conscripted the following year after the First Conscription Act. Neither would survive the war. The following year, following the Second Conscription Act, Atticus was also conscripted. Without the men to farm the plantation, Gideon's wife and daughter moved in with Atticus' wife and attempted to keep the plantation running as best they could.
A few months later, in 1864, news of increasing bands of roaming marauders preying on defenceless families in southern territories circulated - many of them Confederate deserters as desertion from the Confederate army was at an all-time high. Against his objections, Atticus attempted to desert to protect his family, but was caught, and summarily executed. Without the men there to protect them, in 1865 the plantation was attacked by a group of marauding deserters. One of the deserters took a fancy to the pretty Cora (now 13) and, whilst unsuccessfully defending Cora's honour, Dottie was killed in the scuffle.
His wartime promotion to Major was cold comfort now he had little to return home to, but he took his duty and pride seriously and, in the end, his regiment fought the longest of any Texan regiment in the war, but was ultimately defeated in the battle of Spanish Fort. Gideon, the remaining officers and other men surrendered to the Union on 11 May 1865 at Meridian.
After a period of time, with the war officially ended, Gideon was paroled and released. He returned home from the war a changed man. Once an idealist, now he was more jaded and bitter. The way of life he and his family had shed blood for, was gone, as were most of his family. He still had Cora, but being violently stripped of her honour and her mother murdered protecting her had damaged her, and she took much of Gideon's time and over the years would become more troublesome. With his brother and nephews dead, Gideon inherited the family plantation, which he immediately sold off for a fair price - though not as fair as it would have received prior to the war, especially with the emancipation of the plantation's handful of slaves. He gave a respectable amount to Atticus' widow, who was keen to leave Independence to resettle elsewhere with less heartbreaking memories; enough to help her resettle and ensure her comfort. It had always been Dottie's dream to be a journalist. Although she worked in a newspaper, she was only allowed to write the occasional piece for lady readers because of attitudes of the time; although Gideon had always respected Dottie's vibrant spirit and sharp tongue. Both to honour her memory as part of the grieving process, and because of his increasing respect and interest in journalism, he used the remainder of the plantation sale to purchase a print company in financial trouble, from which he ran a newspaper with his daughter Cora, whilst still carrying out his law practice on the side to support the fledgeling business.
As the times and way of life changed, he found many of the changes hard and was evermore aggravated by the political spectrum, and his newspaper reflected this. Whilst he reported the facts - as he would find in unconscionable to do otherwise as both a lawyer and individual - he would liberally report on things that other papers didn't dare to for fear of sanction, and wrote opinion columns expressing his dissatisfaction and inciting action. It made him supporters and detractors in equal measure. But most notably, his attacking the establishment so fearlessly brought him to the attention of wealthy socialite Caroline O'Hara; a beautiful and graceful southern belle and war widow. Or at least, that was the public perception of her, but she was in fact a kindred of the Brujah clan. She took him as her lover - her mysteriousness and energy intoxicating Gideon and making him truly get over Dottie for the first time. She encouraged him to fight for his beliefs, even at personal cost because, she tols him, fighting for the right causes was worth personal loss, even death.
Then in 1876 his daughter Cora, who had been most unladylike and improper since the events during the war, appeared to have finally recovered thanks to the love and care of a good man. She introduced him to her father with great trepidation for him to ask Gideon for her hand in marriage. Whilst Gideon had heard good things about this man from Cora, and was happy that she was finally happy again, when he met the man he was horrified to discover the man was a negro. In the ensuing arguments not only did Gideon refuse to consent to marriage but, on being told that Cora was with child, officially disowned her. Although he told he he hoped she would find happiness, he could not support her decision - neither morally, nor with the money his family had literally died to protect a way of life. That would be the last time he saw Cora as Caroline, impressed by Gideon's actions in standing up for his beliefs despite the pain and loss it caused him, believed he was ready and embraced him soon after.
As Kindred
Gideon and Caroline spent a few years together. Their whirlwind romance escalating further now that he knew the truth of what she was, and she mentored him awhile. But eventually, she tired of him and moved on to find fresh new blood and energy, although they would always remain respectful and loyal to each other.
But then in 1890 he heard that the Camarilla had recently conquered a Sabbat domain known as Bakersfield, and the new Prince was inviting kindred to settle there and help increase the Camarilla's influence in the domain. With Independence rapidly declining in the post-war years due to a failure to grant a right of way for a new railroad track, a decision that would eventually cripple the once-wealthy town; Gideon decided to move to this new domain. His last action was to fake his death and leave his newspaper and its financial assets to his daughter Cora (although he kept his personal assets, kept separately from the business since his embrace). Time had somewhat tempered his anger and, although he still felt negroes were inferior, he missed his daughter and always regretted how things ended between them; in fact, even in his anger he had always respected Cora standing up for her own beliefs, however different from his own. Unfortunately, she was her father's daughter, and both father and daughter were too proud to attempt reconciliation with each other - something made even harder after his embrace. He could at least allow his official death, and a letter of forgiveness and reconciliation to be read to her when his will was executed, to end their story on a more positive note.
Gideon prospered in the new domain, which was re-incorporated soon after as the domain of Ashford. Most of the idealist Brujah had established domains in the educational sector, with the Ventrue and Toreadors, as usual, dominating the business, legal, judicial and cultural domains. Although there was competition from the Ventrue and Toreadors, he managed to establish a foothold in the journalism domain, establishing The Ashford Scoop newspaper. Whilst he was content to allow the Ventrue and Toreadors to continue reporting on things that suited the establishment and the masquerade, he ensured The Scoop was the distinguished opposition - he saw it as his duty to challenge the establishment because, in doing so, it kept it on its toes and ever-improving, even if only for self-preservation. But soon Kratus showed his true colours - if you were part of the establishment you were welcome in the domain. But if you had differing opinions, you had to best watch your step or you may end up greeting the sunrise. Gideon's opposition grew ever more vocal, and as the Anarch Movement began to form and grow in influence (both in Ashford as well as California), Gideon gradually found himself supporting it increasingly; although he was always careful to keep his affiliations secret to the Camarilla for fear of Kratus' reprisals. This was not out of fear of death, but an awareness that although he was willing to die for the cause, he could not fight for the cause if dead.
He found allies with Thomas Wingfield and Lilah "Mustang Sally" Fox, despite their polar opposites. Thomas was an idealist and intellectual like himself and, like Gideon, supported the Anarchs (or at least, disagreed with much of Kratus' authoritarianism). Sally was almost the stereotype iconoclast - but her passionate attitude and willing to stand up for herself and her allies, was something he respected. The three worked well together and effectively set up the Anarch Movement in Ashford. Thomas was the secret leader - taking a secret persona to direct the movement whilst using his influence with the Prince and as Primogen to subtly misdirect things to aid the movement (though often this resulted in a public perception of him being a Kratus loyalist and coward who would sacrifice his clan's anarch-suspected members without a sufficient fight). Gideon became its voice; inspiring the troops, using the Scoop to send secret messages and anarch information exchange encoded within it's articles, and often providing financial assistance and other assistance when possible. Sally, whilst never officially an active anarch, was known by the anarchs to be a secret Warlord - highly respected (especially by the iconoclast Brujah) in Ashford, she served as a recruiter for the cause - informing Gideon of likely supporters of the cause (primarily from the Brujah as well as Gangrel clans that frequented her establishment) and, on occasion, provided her considerable muscle to support the causes' aims. Due to her openness and the obviousness of her establishment as a Brujah and Gangrel hangout, she could not openly be an anarch but everyone knew where her loyalties lay and ensured she was kept an open secret.
The Sabbat Crusade & Aftermath
When the Sabbat Crusade came, it was comparatively easy for these three to get organised - they had always operated in secret and fought a secret war against Kratus' regime, except now it was an open war against a different enemy. They found all the skills, resources and methods they had used for decades against Kratus becoming exceptionally effective against the new Sabbat threat. Camarilla or Anarch did not matter, as Gideon and his anarchs always saw them as opposite sides of the same coin - whilst the Sabbat were a foreign currency set on consigning them to the history books. Uniting and fighting back was easy - and in the aftermath, the Anarchs have become stronger than ever.
In post-Crusade Ashford, Thomas has become the Prince. Although he is a Camarilla loyalist, he is a supporter of the anarchs. Like Gideon, however, he knows that the Anarchs alone are not powerful enough to hold Ashford as an Anarch free state, nor does it need to be. They both support the Camarilla as an establishment and consider the anarch movement to be a loyal opposition that, done properly, can strengthen the domain. Gideon is a firm believer that had Kratus not been so authoritarian and dismissive of the anarchs and their rabble clan supporters (which included many disgruntled Nosferatu and Malkavians as members or supporters) the attack would likely not have occurred - or not to the damaging scale it did. Regardless, with Thomas as Prince and Gideon finding himself in the position of Brujah Primogen (arguably because Mustang Sally did not challenge him for it, and Boris 'The Butcher' Balagula not having the clan support to challenge him - yet) he considers himself to not just be the voice of the Brujah, but all the Anarchs in Ashford. Rather than the typical Primogen role of controlling his clan and improving its domains, as well as supporting the status quo, he often takes the role as contrarian or devil's advocate on the council, ensuring that the council stays in line and does not become a new version of what has been Ashford's status quo for so long.
Mortal Society
In mortal society, Gideon masquerades as Gabriel Monroe, who is known as the publisher of The Scoop (Ashford) newspaper which does print a physical copy but has of recent years moved predominantly online. The Scoop writes on local and state issues and is known to be hard-hitting and incitive against the government (or whatever gets its attention), but somewhat insensitive towards racism and equality issues.
Gabriel is rarely seen in person (deliberately as Gideon finds it tiresome having to shed and establish new identities periodically if mortals notice a lack of ageing; especially in the modern nights with the internet and mortal institutions making it so much harder to preserve) and typically only for big events. He operates through two key people - Renee Monroe, Gabriel's wife and the Scoop's accountant; and Raymond Peterson, the Editor-in-Chief of the Scoop. Renee and Raymond have been dominated and entranced enough times to be very loyal to Gideon, in addition to Renee being his ghoul and therefore blood bound and in love with him. He treats both just well enough for them to believe he is loyal to them in turn. Realistically, he understands that as a ghoul Renee's lack of ageing will eventually become a masquerade concern, and he may have to "replace" her as then she will no longer be fit for his intended purpose. He has contemplated petitioning the mysterious Clan Senya to change her appearance - but he's not sure if he wants a wife that looks old, or if he can be bothered with the hassle of "retiring" Renee if she gets a new, younger identity - less hassle to just get rid of her. On kinder days, he thinks maybe he might rearrange her memories to preserve the masquerade, stop giving her his blood, divorce her and let her live out her life. In the case of Raymond, Gabriel respects that he is good at his job and runs the Scoop well. So good, in fact, that Gideon has had to "convince" him not to leave the Scoop a few times when bigger news outlets have attempted to recruit him. But, ultimately, Raymond is a valuable asset as long as he is producing - and Gideon will quickly dump him if he outlives his usefulness, or he begins to suspect Gideon or Renee do not seem to age. Fortunately, Raymond has only been the editor-in-chief for a handful of years, and this should not be a decision Gideon needs to rush into.
Personality
To those that don't know him, Gideon's personality matches the scowl and curmudgeon attitude which are his trademark. He tends to be forcefully direct, abrasive and quick to mete out criticisms and abuse. Those that get to know him better know that, at heart, he's not a bad person (or at least that's what he believes). He believes in society as a whole and the betterment of society as a whole is good for the individual as a self; but that this is something that everyone has to take responsibility for and work towards. Everyone has to accept they have a role and a purpose - and must find what it is and fulfill it. Whilst he will defend those Brujah who cause trouble with their passions, iconoclasts who rebel just for the sake of it, without any real goal, are a dislike. This is likely why, despite being an anarch supporter, he is staunchly anti-Sabbat.
But his long life has jaded him somewhat. Whilst he tries to remember he was once human, and not think of them simply as expendable resources and food, this has gotten harder for him. Some say that whilst he cares for society and humanity and his newspaper endeavours to better them, that this is much like a shepherd caring for his flock - caring for them as a while, maybe even with some animals that are his favourite, but still thinking of them as a whole as livestock. Nevertheless, he can be civil and masquerade with the best of them when he needs to - but he prefers to interact with kine over social media and the press than in person, usually only in person dealing with those he either has little choice or warrant his attention for some reason.
Whilst he has also changed considerably from his mortal days in attitudes, kindred are creatures of habit. Although his family's plantation at it's height only had a handful of slaves, that was still the culture of his time and a century has done little to change his attitude towards the role of negroes and ladies. He understands that mortals have, generally, changed their social attitudes to be more woke towards both race and gender, and he feels that he really does try to keep up with modern attitudes and accept everyone based on merit, and not race or gender, but it's a deeply-ingrained belief. Whilst he finds working women strange, this often appears more as an old-fashioned respect and manner towards women but rarely in a blatantly misogynistic and disrespectful manner, although women may not realise that. And likewise whilst he is more deliberately careful in how he speaks to people of colour, the fact is that it is obvious to even the casual observer that he is more likely to employ a white person than a person of colour, or take their views more seriously, give them support, and so forth. The few coloured workers at his business have to work twice as hard to impress him (which is why most are grateful that the daily operations are run by his ghoul, who has no such ingrained attitudes). Most importantly, he is far more likely to be pushed to anger - and the resulting frenzy - by a person of colour (whether by deliberate or accidental provocation) than a non-coloured person. Unsurprisingly, he was one of the Brujah most against the Camarilla agreeing to allow the Assamites a seat on the Primogen council in return for their assistance in the Sabbat Crusade, and whilst he is respectful but wary to Primogen Panikkar, as she is a fellow Primogen, he is visibly aloof and often hostile towards her whip and other clan members.
Other Notes: The Klu Klux Klan
Gideon became a member of the fledgeling Klu Klux Klan shortly after it's creation in 1865. He may have been on the losing side of the war, but he wasn't able to simply ignore his prejudices and beliefs. During his mortal days he was active in it, holding some positions and providing legal aid for their members when their activities caused them to fall afould of the law.
But it has been a long time since then. And although he's still somewhat racist at heart - this has devolved more into an innate white superiority attitude than a staunchly anti-black attitude. He no longer sees them as property and subhumans, though he still naturally puts non-blacks instinctively above them in his regards. Still, he sympathises with some of the modern KKK's attitudes, especially regards the preservation of the white race and the right for white people to be proud without fear; though rarely to a point of being militant and certainly not actively acting against coloured people unless it suits his needs in some other field. But the connection to the KKK and its members was helpful to him during his mortal days, providing connections and allies of like-minded people, even a small military force (ie violent KKK members) at times, and this is something he has kept connections with because it suits him to do so. He could have cultivated this further and easily ended up controlling the local KKK klavern if he'd desired, but he is smart enough considering his mortal influences to keep the connection close enough to be beneficial, yet loose enough to be deniable if required. He anonymously donates funding to the local klavern (anonymous to the outside world, but the klavern knows he is a supporter) and, although not a lawyer any more, has kept up with the law and will still provide legal advice and assistance if he can, to a degree. As a known supporter, financier and ally of the klavern's leader, he can call on them for assistance and information and with the right nudging, get some of the klavern's militant members to act against targets he sets them against (usually by directing their rage or calling on them for support against someone that is causing problems for him and how this may affect his patronage of the klan).
Combat Style
Despite having served in two wars, and being a Brujah, Gideon is not really a fighter at heart. He is a demagogue at heart and a critic of the establishment, and his battlefield these days is in the media and political arenas. To many, this is all they've ever seen or know of the man, and would not expect him to be much of a threat.
Those who know of his mortal past, or of his many years of being a secret anarch movement leader, would not be surprised to know he is a competent fighter with both his fists and blades (both his famous Bowie knife, and with swords) - learnt in the field of battle, and practiced regularly enough to maintain the skills. He is also a good marksman, having had much practical experience in his mortal days and, as a firearms enthusiast and member of the NRA with a gun permit, who practices regularly at a gun range (both for entertainment and to keep connections with some contacts), has at the least not deteriorated in skill.
As one of the eldest Brujah, it would be unsurprising to learn that he has at least moderate to high levels of the clan's disciplines of Celerity and Potence, making him in all fast and deadly with firearms, and fast and powerful in melee.
It is reported that during the Sabbat Crusade a coterie of kindred arrived with some lupine support to "rescue" him at Thomas Wingfield's request, for him to be asked to take the role of Brujah Primogen in the new council. When they arrived, he was defending a group of iconoclast neonates from the Sabbat and seemed to not really need their help much - although he was grateful for it as it ensured the survival of the neonates, which included Peter Garfield.
Social Style
Gideon may not show it, but he cares about others and society in general - including both the Anarch Movement and the Camarilla, which he does not see as enemies but much as like the kine Democrat and Republican parties; same overall goals of doing what they believe is best for their domains, but having different individual aims, beliefs and methods as to how to achieve that. Unlike the Sabbat, which he believes is unbridled chaos that serves only an elite few elders or the monstrous whims of those he barely even considers kindred, he believes the Camarilla and the Anarch Movement have more in common than they (or at least the Camarilla) believe. Whilst most Primogen (and elders) are interested in only what benefits them, or their clans, Gideon has shown to actually be willing to self-sacrifice for the greater cause.
In this case, the greater cause can mean one of two things:
- the well-being of Clan Brujah,
- the well-being of the domain of Ashford as a whole (which includes its neonates as well as its elders)
Despite his hot-headedness, stubbornness, innate racism, and curmudgeon outlook, Gideon is surprisingly pragmatic and intelligent. Those that show him respect and civility, take care not to provoke him, and are straight-forward with him will find him quite willing to negotiate or make fair deals. If they are politically knowledgeable enough to converse about kindred or kine politics, or current affairs, he is a surprisingly pleasant conversationalist. To those who show him this respect and prove, by action, to be trustworthy and loyal, find him to be willing to give aid and advice, often for free - after all, if the neonates prosper, the domain as a whole prospers.
The approach, however, is best done by those who are not people of colour; and preferably by males, at least for certain topics - though it has been shown he has a weakness for southern belles, and a pretty, urbane southern belle can sometimes do more with a smile and a whisper than the most intelligent and well-argued businessman.
