Background

Elizabeth likes to joke that her birth was the catalyst that caused the English Civil War. She was born to a woman of Portuguese descent married to a Parliamentarian officer of the New Model Army, who died routing the Royalist advance guard's surprise attack during the Battle of St Fagan. Elizabeth was still a young child then and, whilst this left her family with a strong level of respectability, it meant she did not have the firm hand of a father growing up; her mother's priority was to manage the household without the support of a husband who was typically away with the army most of the time. Although Elizabeth's mother remarried a couple of years later to gain financial provision for her family, her new husband saw Elizabeth and her brother simply as obligations to care for and not as his own children. Although he did not treat them badly, he had little love or interest in them beyond his obligations and generally left them to their own devices as long as they did not do anything to disrupt the household. This means that she was considered to have not been properly trained in discipline and "spoiled" by her parents' indulgences, leading to her becoming too free-spirited and not pious and modest enough... a rebel of her time.

Although Elizabeth was well-taught in book-learning, music and languages as the norm for women of the time, she wanted more than just to be educated just enough to become someone's good wife. Although she applied to a private school, she was rejected when her gender was discovered even though her test scores were six places above that of the man accepted in her place. Even the expensive boarding school her new step-father sent her to (to keep her quiet and hopefully instil some discipline in the unruly and problematic child) did little more than teach her accomplishments that she considered should be hobbies, rather than purposeful - French, Italian, Latin (as part of religious studies), spelling, needlework, dancing and music as well as how to manage a home. Fortunately, she was able to access her brothers' books and self-educate herself to a degree and, whilst her step-father never encouraged her, he didn't actively try to stop her either. He simply allowed her to indulge in her fantasies, expecting Elizabeth would conform to his patriarchal desires of becoming a respectable woman he could arrange to be suitably married off when the time came. He was wrong. As she grew up, Elizabeth learnt the truth of things, such as her step-father having a mistress - an open secret that many others knew about, including her mother, but none openly discussed. She learnt this was something not uncommon among "respectable" men - and Elizabeth realised that Stuart-era society was all a facade. As long as the husband provided for the family, and did not bring scandal, few cared what went on behind closed doors.

When she was old enough, her step-father attempted to marry her off to respectable Englishmen, forcing her into arranged engagements and courtships. But Elizabeth vehemently resisted, making herself too obviously intelligent, educated and non-submissive to ever be a completely pious and submissive (and therefore respectable) wife. It was in one such marriage attempt, however, that she discovered the truth that "respectable Englishmen" demonstrated their gentility on their sleeves for public show to avoid society's condemnation but, behind closed doors, it was a very different story. After successfully avoiding the latest marriage arrangement, Elizabeth was surprised when the intended suitor approached her in private. Whilst he recognised that both Elizabeth did not want the marriage, and he needed a more submissive and pious woman for a wife, her fiery spirit and comely looks nonetheless aroused his desire for her still. He offered her an expensive jewel necklace as a "gift" if she would consent to a clandestine "private liaison" instead. This taught Elizabeth that men wanted what men wanted... and were willing to pay. For the right women, of the right breeding, and with discretion, men were willing to pay very large sums, and treat them well. And the reality was that if you were independently rich, there was little you couldn't do. It's amazing how things are overlooked when your wealth isn't tied to the whims of your parents. And best of all, most of these gentiles needed to keep the liaisons secret, lest risk scandal and shame.

At first, she began arranging private encounters for herself, which became quickly extremely lucrative. She was careful not to have too many "male friends" lest word spread and scandal cause her to become diminished and forced to become a common street prostitute - her value was in remaining extremely ideal for marriage, yet unobtainable. But she later began recruiting other suitable girls - attractive, intelligent women who wanted more than what society demanded, and both careful enough to be trusted to keep quiet about it whilst being willing to do what needed to be done. In almost no time she was making a considerable amount of money, and her male friends were willing to provide advice and assistance in how best to both invest it. She also spent large sums helping educate her ladies, which she saw as a return on her investment by making them more desirable and, therefore, demanding greater "gifts" for their company; as well as keeping herself and her ladies out of trouble with the law by arranging donations and occasional "private discussions" with the right lawmen. Whilst in actuality utterly criminal and shameful to society if it were to be known, her unofficial 'gentleman's club' was smooth and quiet enough to appear completely respectable. To society, she was just a young woman helping other young women meet potential suitors or men who could introduce them to potential suitors. When the Great Plague hit Norwich once again, Elizabeth had enough savings to support keeping herself and her ladies in a private location out of the city until the plague ended, a calamity that killed a third of Norwich's population. In time, her operation came to the attention of a Ventrue who, on discovering the ambitious, intelligent, socially adept and successful young woman, was impressed - and rewarded that ambition with the Embrace. Although she would go on to use a succession of mortal aliases to facilitate interacting with kine society, usually based on her birth surname and a more modern forename, Elizabeth has continued to permanently use the name Rose since her Embrace. This was originally a pseudonym for her secret society belle de nuit identity but now works well as a general identifier - she also likes it as she is aware of "The Clan of the Rose", a clan she has very good ties with and thinks the name helps by association.

In time, bored of Norwich and to ease preserving the Masquerade, she moved to London. A few decades later, she moved again, beginning a century=and-a-half spree of spending a few decades each in Paris, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, before finally moved to America where she once again began roaming, spending time in places such as New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, before moving to San Francisco in 1944, one of the few Camarilla cities in California after the Second Anarch Revolt established the Anarch Free State. She remained there until 1995, when she accepted an invitation by her progeny, Eric West, to visit his new casino in the city of Ashford. She found herself liking the place and, after the local Board offered her a place amongst the Aedile in recognition of her age, decided to remain there. At least, until she decides to change her mind and move on again.

Mortal Society

Under the pseudonym Rose, Elizabeth is known to run the AnoniMiss agency, which operates mostly out of word of mouth and their Dark Web site, which has contact information. It is informal and decentralised, with Rose being the only central factor to coordinate it all. She has various girls (and a few boys) of every ethnicity, gender, and sexual persuasion working for her. They all operate under fake names, chosen by Rose, traditionally that of a flower native to their home region, or of significance to them, although on occasion animal or insect (e.g. "Fox", or "Butterfly") names are chosen (especially if there isn't an appropriate unused flower name. For all AnoniMiss records and communications, only this alias is used, protecting their true identities from both clients and legal scrutiny. Typically, only Rose knows their true identities, and most of her escorts were hand-picked from supplicants or potentials discovered. All are thoroughly vetted and chosen for more than just their looks. She ensures all her escorts are intelligent (although she does not discriminate against lack of education, and provides training for her girls as both a requirement and a perk), no problematic criminal, drug or mental health histories, and must speak English as well as know (or be willing to learn) at least one other language. Ultimately, they are all very high-class escorts who command a small fortune from elite clients and so need to be more than just pretty hookers - for the incredible prices they're hired out for, they need to be nothing less than the perfect companions.

Rose hires them out to highly-vetted clients (usually businessmen, lawyers, doctors, politicians, celebrities and judges) and although they officially serve as companions fojr functions, in reality, they cater for sexual encounters (typically fetishistic or "the Girlfriend Experience") with discretion and professionality being the trademark. The girls are all independent and are offered the contracts, and can refuse or attempt to rearrange for any reason with few questions asked. Most of her escorts have other lives, and do this on the side - and most have a vested interest in secrecy for their own reasons. Them being hard to access actually makes them higher demand. Her girls are models, actresses, lawyers, doctors, teachers and more - much of their allure and success is in being those women people may want but cannot achieve, and would not expect to be involved in this line of work. Any girls who decide they want to go their own way are thanked and well-wished by Rose personally. Curiously, it's been noted (mostly by frustrated law enforcement) that the girls who work for AnoniMiss remember Rose well but have difficulty talking about her to outsiders. They are generally dismissive and evasive when asked about her and, if pressed, are unable to describe what Rose looked like, where they met, or give any other details that could be used to locate or identify Rose. AnoniMiss girls don't ever seem to have this problem when speaking to each other, or when trying to remember Rose of their own accord. Most of the girls work for Rose for a few years before moving on - many of them get into it to pay their way through College, for financial support, or for the enjoyment of it. But eventually, the time comes when most have the desire to move on with their lives, or the ravages of age make most of them less in-demand and they get retired or semi-retired, in practice.

Rose typically hires her girls out at a rate of $1,500 an hour for up to 3 hours, with negotiable discounts for longer periods. Regular clients get special discounts and packages, typically:

• $2,000 for a 2-hour package
• $5,000 for a 6-hour package
• $9,000 for the half-day/whole-night package (up to approximately 12 hours, although at this level a little wiggle room is expected)
• $12,000 for a whole-day package (in this case, this means pick up early morning and will remain for an overnight stay).
• $25,000 for the weekend package (Generally Friday night pickup and remain until Monday morning).

Longer durations must be negotiated, but are typically +$5000/day.

"The Elite", Rose's top five, cost $5,500 for a 2-hour slot (although they often do not last that long), and $2,500 per hour after, with discounts negotiable for longer periods than 3+ hours. The Elite typically operate with long-term clients or special events that are predictable in nature and duration.

In all cases, the hiring cost includes transportation to the client, but not accrued additional expenses such as the cost of any hotel rooms, dinner, opera tickets or similar, all of which the client must pay for separately. Payment is typically cash in an envelope, known as "the gift" as Rose does not normally accept any form of electronic, cheque or other traceable payment (as they could be detected or used as evidence by law enforcement). There are exceptions, however, typically long-standing and reliable clients with the right connections for it to be easily written off as a company expense. From a legal point of view, Rose hires out her girls for their time, not for sex - it is up to the girls and their client to decide what to do, giving Rose and the girls some legal deniability - but she knows this is a tenuous argument that a good prosecutor can dismantle, and takes precautions against this. As long as she has plausible deniability, Rose has enough connections (especially given that many judges, politicians and lawmen are amongst her clients) to keep legal attention away.

The client is expected to give "the gift" to the escort on arrival, typically after some polite introductory conversation where they discuss any expectations and requirements, most of which are usually pre-informed to Rose but may need detail or additions. The girls aren't forced to do anything they don't want to, and can cancel and leave if they feel the need - this is usually done before accepting the gift, usually because the girl feels uncomfortable for some reason, though can be at any stage. Once they have received payment, the girls call Rose to check in, and do so again once they leave the client. For long-duration, it is typical that the girls check in occasionally. If necessary, Rose will give a refund (or other recompense as appropriate) as Rose works hard to ensure that her girls are safe. Abusive clients not only find themselves banned but typically get a life-changing personal visit from a very unhappy Rose, or feel her disfavour in some other, obvious and detrimental way. Although Rose protects her girls, she does not appreciate them being overly scared. She spends a lot of effort vetting clients to ensure their safety but is willing to accept that (especially with new clients) they can never be completely guaranteed of safety. Girls who "cry wolf" too often, however, find themselves being offered only the inferior jobs and/or being let go. Ultimately, this is a game not without risk and if the girls are too squeamish or skittery, then Rose will recommend they seek alternate employment. Rose provides all her girls with gold Invisawear jewellery (typically bracelet or necklace) with the AnoniMiss logo, which contains a smart panic button that the girls can use if they find themselves scared and in distress, and Rose will send someone to help them. In the case where her girls have been hurt, or encounter legal problems, Rose has been known to cover all the legal and medical expenses (depending on the situation, pro-bono, or will arrange a repayment scheme - typically a larger cut of their takings). One of the reasons why legal authorities have a hard time going against Rose is that she is known to treat her girls so well that most would readily take the proverbial bullet for her.

Rose herself hires out for $10,000 an hour with no time minimum, although she rarely bothers (or is requested) for less than two hours and, likewise, rarely hires out for longer periods than 3 hours. When she does it's for good clients, (or for a specific alterior purpose) and negotiates special rates - often substantially less, even free, if she feels the benefit of the arrangement may be worth more than the money. A date with a judge or district attorney is worth more to her by having them friendly and cooperative with her, than simply more money that she doesn't really need as she is already incredibly wealthy.

Other Notes: the Elite

Although Rose has dozens of escorts working for her, there are five escorts who are of particular importance. Known within AnoniMiss as The Elite, these five hire out for the highest prices and get the best job offers. Several of them came from San Francisco to Ashford with Rose (in 1995) and have not perceivable aged, making it obvious to the kindred that at least these 3, and likely all 5, have been turned into ghouls. The anonymous nature of AnoniMiss' operations makes keeping their lack of ageing concealed manageable - few clients keep to the same girls long-term enough to notice the lack of ageing, and Rose takes pains to rotate their client lists so that clients cannot privately locate the girls once they are no longer available - backing this up with selective memory rewriting if required.

Some wonder why Rose goes through the effort - she has enough girls and makes enough money that even the high prices of the Elite may seem not worth the effort required for a kindred to maintain the masquerade over these few ghouls. The answer is that these girls are worth more to Rose than simply money. These five are very good at what they do - and although each has been well-trained and are experienced enough to handle almost any job requirement, each has a specialty (as do many of the standard AnoniMiss girls, although the Elite are particularly good at it) and has either been with Rose a long time and proven their worth, or have shown great potential. They have all built up their own networks of important clients - people that Rose would find it hard to directly influence without obvious efforts, and Rose cannot be everywhere at once - and effectively serve as Rose's spies and agents in these areas. This is not to say that they are secret agents masquerading as escorts but rather that it is easier for Rose to use one of her girls to get the pillow talk from and influence a politician who is a regular client of hers, than it is to try to approach the client herself. She can direct them to actively find out things or try to influence things but most of the time the Elite (and to a lesser degree, all the AnoniMiss agents) passively observe and report interesting information back to Rose (typically given a bonus for interesting and useful finds). Most of them have normal occupations outside of AnoniMiss, which Rose could restrict if she desired but prefers not to for a variety of reasons.

Named after the orange blossom (official home state flower). From Florida and of Brazilian and African-American descent. Has a pre-law dual-major degree in Africana Studies and International Relations from Brown University (an Ivy League institution) and studied law at the Harvard Law School. Came with Rose from San Francisco and is Rose's longest-working girl (looks late 20s but is actually 38). Normally works for the Ashford branch of the NAACP. She is also Rose's lawyer for AnoniMiss-related legal advice, and provides basic legal training for the other girls (to give them legal knowledge so they won't easily fall for the tactics of anti-prostitution police, and know their rights when they have problems).

• Lokelani - "The Firecracker"

Named after the Lokelani [the pink Damask rose] (official home island flower). From Hawaii and of Chinese and Filipino descent. Has a degree in Dance from the San Francisco State University school of Theatre and Dance. Came with Rose from San Francisco. Normally works as a professional dancer.

• Sunflower - "The Sweet One"

Named after the Ukrainian Sunflower (official country flower). Born in San Francisco but of Ukrainian descent. Has a passion for languages and other cultures - did a B.A. Degree in Chinese (with Minor in Japanese language) at San Francisco State University. Used to work as a photography model (fashion/lingerie/fine art glamour) but left that aside since joining AnoniMiss. Has no life roadmap or intentions - just enjoying being young and pretty (or rather, kept young and pretty by being a ghoul). Actually enjoys her AnoniMiss job as she loves meeting people and learning about other cultures - as well as the perks of being young and healthy forever. Very gregarious.
