Appearance
Kisa has been masquerading as different identities since her mortal days - having been made a ghoul and moulded into a persona by her Serpent of the Light domitor for years before her Embrace. As such she no longer remembers what she once looked like or her birth name - and it does not matter. She only remembers what she was moulded to be, and who that person became after the Embrace. As she exists to serve the Clan as a Phantom, she is constantly taking on new identities - sometimes for a few days, sometimes for decades - but eventually she moves on again. Kisa no longer has an original form to return to, and her "base form" is simply whatever identity is currently her principal one. In particular, Kisa is a "doppelganger" - a specialist in taking the appearance of others. She believes it is usually more efficient as a Phantom to replace someone already integrated where she wants to infiltrate than to create a new identity with which to try and infiltrate - always harder as people are typically distrustful of outsiders and newcomers, and there are always holes or blank spots in fake backgrounds that can be discovered to reveal the falsehood.
For the last few years, Kisa has been masquerading as Monica "Lola" González, an identity she stole. Lola was a Mexican-American native Ashfordian, with both a convenient background for her intended usage, and similar ethnicity to her original - which means she can use her natural accent without having to make the effort to maintain a fake one (she will state that using her powers to change her vocal cords, and speaking a dialect and imitating a specific voice and way of speaking are two different things). She admits to "improving" Lola's appearance somewhat - building on her basic appearance by making her more alluring and in better physical shape - modifications easily written off as the result of Lola now being drug-free and living a healthier and more active lifestyle. Lola is quite tall, with a slender yet voluptuous-curved figure. Her hair is naturally long and deep brown, as which match her brown eyes. When using the blush of life, her skin appears naturally tanned and Lola's Mexican heritage is obvious.
As Lola is affiliated with street gangs and works in a tattoo shop (at least, as a cover) most of the time she wears street-level clothing, but styles designed to maker her look good - as her role requires her to look good for her Sureño boyfriend. Tight jeans, leather pants, or short skirts with tight-fitting blouses or t-shirts are the norm, typically with a leather jacket or coat in the winter months. When it is required, she wears dresses which compliment her sexual allure, typically black minidresses, often leather, or partial-leather. Her make-up is usually striking and strong, with deep red lipstick, smokey eyes and dark mascara and eye shadow being the norm.
When not actively masquerading as Lola, such as when dealing with her own Clanmates or in Elysium, she will usually retain Lola's appearance, but her clothing and make-up become slightly softer, going less vampy and more elegant, such as long evening dresses and lighter red, pink or natural-colour lipsticks. Her hair is often tied up or styles more elegantly.
That said, this is her current signature look, and mostly done for effect in an effort to be more standardised for the purpose of being the clan Whip and integrating into Camarilla society, which she has relatively little experience with as she has spent most of her existence embedded in the Sabbat. She has been told that keeping some degree of fixed identity is appreciated by and easier for the other Clans and younger Clanmates to comprehend and liaise with. Kisa can, and does, change anything from minor aspects of her appearance to complete changes regularly and on a whim as suits her needs and desires. No two of her herd or contacts know her as the same person.
Background
The woman who now calls herself Kisa think fate was fair on her - on the one side they gave her a bad start in life by being raised in a Santa Fe orphanage after a bandit attack killed her parents, but on the other hand she had street smarts and was blessed with natural charm and good looks. She quickly learnt that you either made yourself the top dog, or became the underdog (or as she now thinks of it "you're either the predator, or the prey." When her charms wouldn't work, she learnt to rely on her fists. She wasn't the strongest kid, but she was tough and stubborn, and popular enough to have friends to back her, and that was usually enough to dissuade or cow those who got in her face. It wasn't long before she fell into racketeering with some of the other low-lives at her orphanage, running them as a crew, which worked well for a while, until she got caught (because she wasn't bright enough to keep it hidden - but she learnt from her mistakes) and spent some time in jail; which she was grateful about - had she been older she'd have likely been lynched or hanged to death. Ultimately it was not so much about self-gratification as it was a refusal to let others be the master of her own fate and to prosper in any environment. She learnt how to find the best people to align herself with, and what the best way to achieve that was.
Eventually, the orphanage got fed up of her shit and kicked her out. Lacking many options, she ended up becoming a prostitute in a Canyon Road brothel, where she quickly adapted her charms to get the best and richest punters, then once again racketeering (especially "badger game" extortion whilst off-the-clock). Unbeknownst to her, the club's owner was a Serpent of the Light, and he found her activities laudable. He made her his ghoul - and although he treated her relatively well (for a Sabbat ghoul), she resented the forced blood bond, and his attempts to indoctrinate her into his cultist beliefs. She resisted with every fibre of her being but was never able to overcome the strength of the blood bond. In time, he moulded her into "Kisa" the snake-queen, a serpentine dancer and seductress who he used to lure in prey for his scheme. But she always resisted - not because she abhorred what she was being made to do, but because of the lack of free will - and her resistance came to the attention of a Phantom of Clan Senya that had been monitoring and waiting for the right time to strike. When the United States army rolled into Santa Fe in 1846, the Camarilla followed - attacking Santa Fe's Sabbat from the shadows. As part of the invasion, the Phantom recruited her with the promise of breaking the bond, Embracing her and then together staking her former domitor, who her new sire allowed her to diablerize so she could steal his knowledge for the clan's benefit.
The fact that for the first time she belonged to a group that genuinely valued her and her skills, even supporting and encouraging them, and didn't judge inspired her, and she willingly allowed her sire to break what remained of her humanity and re-mould her into a weapon. She spent the traditional twenty year Agoge period with her sire, being tutored in the Clan's customs, laws, traditional languages and signature Discipline. By the time her sire was done with Kisa, she was barely able to remember her mortal life and little mattered to her except duty. For the first time in her existence she had something to belong to, and a purpose greater than herself. After the Agoge, she spent decades discovering herself and her purpose - infiltrating mortal organisations and low-risk assignments. During this period, known by the clan as The Great Deception Kisa generally masqueraded as a Ventrue, developing her personal masquerade skills. When she underwent the Becoming and became an Aderfí, she spent time on increasingly more difficult infiltrations into Sabbat territory until she was made a Fántasma (Phantom), after which she went deep undercover into the Sabbat, masquerading as a Serpent of the Light, operating and reporting to Clan superiors in Oxnard.
When Oxnard fell in 2004 to Cathayan betrayal and conquest, Kisa relocated to Ashford as a base of operations. At the time she used the identity of Stacey Haze and was notable for arranging a series of incidents that resulted in the then-Whip Valerie Leigh being removed as Whip and, shortly afterwards, becoming Prodigal. Although Valerie likely feels otherwise, Kisa has stated that this was not done out of malice but because as a Sentinel (a follower of the Path of Gehenna) she felt that Primogen Braxton assigning his too-young progeny as the Whip was a mistake and sought to prove it - and by causing her removal, exposed the weakness she believed in. Clarissa Jade became the new Whip, a position she held until her death - and although Jade was much younger than Kisa, she proved more than capable of proving her intellectual ability to keep Kisa in her place, leading to a strong respect between the two women.
Then in 2013 Braxton began getting hints of Sabbat build-up for a Crusade. The long Sabbat invasion of the southern United States had ended just a few years earlier with both factions exhausted, so he knew that the Sabbat would not be able to support another open war invasion - but as Protos Metaxy Ison (First Among Equals) of the state of California, Senya Phantoms gave him credible evidence that a private Black Hand-led group was beginning to get political support for the invasion of a "key Camarilla city on the west coast". With Ashford being the only uncontested Camarilla stronghold in the state, and surrounded by Sabbat-conquered states, he correctly surmised that Ashford would be the target. Amongst others, Kisa was sent in to infiltrate the Sabbat, both to uncover as much as possible about the impending assault and the ringleaders, and to have her in position for when the time was right.
Despite their preparations, information of which was shared with the Nosferatu for mutual preparation and defence, the actual opening attack caught the Camarilla by surprise anyhow - caused by an inadvertent leak by a pair of Senya and Malkavian neonates giving information they thought unimportant to fellow Malkavians, who were actually later revealed to be a defector to the Sabbat and the Black Hand warlord herself in disguise. The Clan fought back as it did best - the non-warrior Senya went to ground and hid themselves, the Clan's youngest, and their allies. The Knights went to war - the [[Knights, Paladins and Men-at-Arms actively engaged the Sabbat forces, defending the Clan or its allies, whilst the Crusaders were led by Braxton who coordinated with Kisa to locate the backers. Although it would ultimately be a headhunting squad led by the same neonates who had leaked the information that got their Whip (and other notable Kindred) killed, along with Valerie Leigh returning from her exile, that killed the Sabbat Warlord and finally ended the Crusade, this was only possible thanks to Kisa identifying the key backer: a Sabbat Bishop in Phoenix, Arizona (which was conquered by the Sabbat in 2006) backing the Crusade, who would have become Archbishop of Ashford (and given the Sabbat a strategic territory right in the heart of the Anarch Free States from which to harass the Anarchs and Cathayans) had the Crusade succeeded. With the key backers identified, Kisa became a Wraith and led a team of Wraiths and Crusaders, which included Elodan, former Sheriff of Oxnard, in a dangerous but successful strike mission that killed the Bishop and several of his key supporters of the Crusade. This assault meant the Crusading force in Ashford no longer had political or financial support from the Sabbat, nor experienced reinforcements - which is what ultimately allowed the Camarilla to defeat the Sabbat Crusade forces.
Despite Kisa wanting to go back undercover into the Sabbat, Braxton felt that the Sabbat would be extra heightened on paranoia and loyalty scrutiny following the failure of the Crusade and the headhunting strike against the Bishop backing it, and so felt it best that Kisa (and all Phantoms under his control not already infiltrated) take a break before attempting a new infiltration. With the Crusade having caused upheaval in Ashford, removing many traditional Camarilla influences and power structures, Braxton instead requested that she become a Shade and use her many years of street knowledge gained by masquerading as a Serpent of the Light to increase the Clan influence with the black market and criminal underworld. Three years later, after taking control of a Downtown Sureño street gang and establishing connections with the criminal underworld and Mexican Mafia by extension, he also requested that she take the position of Clan Whip - a position that had remained vacant since Jade's death. Although Kisa abhors politics and has no ambitions in that respect, the position of Whip is principally to motivate Clan members to present a unified face in matters of clan politics, typically by force of personality or coercion, and so Kisa's unwavering dedication to her clan and years of experience in manipulating others have made her so-far an unexpectedly good (if not always popular) choice for the position.
Mortal Society
Kisa masquerades as Monica "Lola" González, a Mexican-American who officially works as a freelance tattooist working out of LaRoche Ink in Downton Ashford. There was a real Lola, once. She was a girl who grew up in a bad neighbourhood on the east side and dated the wrong people in High School, which got her into drugs. Her only real success was a Sureña and dating some low-level Sureño thugs, before ending up doing time in prison after getting caught trying to hide Sureño drugs. This made her perfect for Kisa's needs. Kisa got her, blood bonded and dominated her into letting her know everything about her life, her time in prison, people she knew and so on. Then Kisa drained her dry, altered her corpse to be unrecognisable, and disposed of the body. Since then, "Lola" has cleaned up her act somewhat - she still hangs with the wrong people, but prison "got her off drugs" and she's remained that way ever since (for the most part). She's also gotten smarter, sneakier, more ruthless, and somehow a lot hotter - so now she's dating the leader of the Varrio Bakers, a different Sureño gang to the one Lola was once a member of. She pretends to be crazy about him but in actuality cares nothing for him beyond his utility to her. She uses her Dominate, Presence and the Blood Bond to control and direct him to do her bidding (and to a subtler degree, the rest of the gang). Although it's common for Sureñas to be shared by male gang members, Kisa also uses her influence to make her ghoul too jealous to allow another to have her. It's bad enough that she needs to degrade herself to be carnal with one of these idiots, much the less be shared! Through the VB, she has improved her connections with La EME (the Mexican Mafia) and the city's underworld as a whole. Lola isn't a true Sureña, however, as this would require her to participate in daytime events and possibly cause problems with her Clan commitments, so she remains known simply as a Latina who dates the leader and helps the gang out in some ways. Secretly, although she controls the Varrio Bakers, she also dates other local Latino gang leaders, allowing her to cast a wide net of contacts and information, whilst preventing them from knowing about her - although she uses different identities for each, with Lola being her principal identity... for now.
Personality
Kisa appears to have a mercurial personality. Few people claim to truly understand her and the only common denominator in most of her clanmates' description of her personality is that none doubt her absolute loyalty in the clan - some would say fanatically so. Some state that she is a jovial, fun-loving and courageous ally, whilst other clanmates describe her as the antichrist incarnate. Some say that she is both, depending on her mood. Those that know her best, know that they do not, in fact, know her well enough to have a claim to know her personality. Her entire existence has been about being whoever she needed to be. When she was mortal she would be the sweet honey badger to lure in victims for her schemes, and the street-smart leader of her juvenile crew. As she got older she worked as a soiled dove and dancer at a brothel, once again using her charms and looks to lure the rich and stupid into her racketeering schemes. The Serpent of the Light who ghouled her moulded her further into Kisa, the ultimate seductress - a living embodiment of Tlazolteotl, the Aztec goddess who represented sexual impurity and sinful behaviour - using her as the lure to make men indulge in their sinful vices, corrupting them to her domitor's desires and giving him power over the corrupted, much as she'd blackmailed the victims of her racketeering. After her Embrace, her sire moulded her further - giving her her freedom and power to be her own master, with the further purpose of serving the clan not because she was forced to, but because she desired to. Throughout all these evolutions, Kisa's looks would get the doors open, but it was her charms that got her through them - and every person was different. Everyone could be seduced, manipulated and corrupted - if the right approach was used. So she became a master at taking on others' personalities - whoever was the best person to impersonate for a given goal - or matching her personality demeanour to whatever worked best for that target. Is it any wonder then that, as her detractors and sympathisers both claim with opposing degrees of sympathy, Kisa has evolved to have no true personality of her own. Instead, she adopts whatever personality she needs for the situation - or the identity she is masquerading. Whether she is genuinely enjoying the activities she appears to be, or simply feigning it, only those capable of deeply probing her mind and emotions can know with any certainty.
She is a follower of the clan's Path of Gehenna, a clan-unique variant of the ancient Road of Blood followed by the Assamite clan during the Dark Ages - now only followed by some traditional Assamites of the warrior caste, mostly those of the schismatic group that split off from their parent clan a few years ago, seeking sanctuary in the Camarilla for the most part; with the main clan's controlling faction the Web of Knives having corrupted the path to suit their diablerous desires. The Senya variant may be considered a corruption too, of course, but is closer to the original Road, modified to suit the clan's needs in the Gehenna war. Its core tenets are loyalty to the clan, protection of its members, and the destruction of its enemies - sanctioning diablerie on the "unworthy" (which the clan assures only means it's enemies outside the Camarilla, though some wonder how truthful this is in reality). This is the closest to a personality Kisa has - she is devout in the path, having followed it long enough and built enough conviction to be a firm believer and stable in her convictions and beliefs, but not fanatical about it quite yet (therefore not feeling the need to diablerize every Tremere that crosses her path as "unworthy"). The clan's core tenets are:
- The blood of Caine is a gift that must be earned.
- Purity, honour, and discipline are the hallmarks of a warrior.
- Do not act with haste — every action requires careful consideration.
- Allowing the Beast to take control is a sign of weakness and unfitness to retain Caine’s blood.
These are her core beliefs, and just about the only thing anyone can be sure she genuinely cares about - to at least some degree. Followers of the Path call themselves Sentinels and this is a role they, and Kisa, take seriously. They monitor - the enemy, their allies, even themselves. Constantly on watch for signs of danger, of the clan's enemies who aims and actions advance the aims of the Antediluvians and Gehenna, enemies such as the Assamite Web of Knives, the Followers of Set and the Baali. But many have taken her loyalty to the clan as meaning she protects them from any harm - and found her seemingly stabbing them in the back. She causes the actions that resulted in then-Whip [[Valerie Leigh (WoD)|Valerie Leigh] losing her position as Whip - because she felt that she was a weak Whip and, by extension, that made the clan weaker. She will cite that Clarissa Jade who followed her was an excellent Whip, and would not have been so had Valerie not returned. The fact that Valerie returned from her Prodigal status and redeemed herself, proving to have become a loyal and effective clanmate during her exile, she adds is further proof that her actions were correct. Would Valerie have become so resilient and capable if she were still in Ashford being coddled by the shadow of her prestigious sire? Valerie's comments on the topic are usually not polite ones and she will likely hold a grudge for a while - Kisa is fine with this, citing it was her duty to make Valerie and the clan stronger and she succeeded in this, and not a popularity contest.
This attitude makes her a frighteningly effective Whip. When she turns up to motivate clan members into doing certain things that the Primogen desires for the interests of the clan (usually in advance of a clan Conclave with a vote on an issue) Kisa's manner varies by clanmate. Some say she sweet talks them and convinces them of the best course of action. Others, less convinced, find themselves in a situation where they can choose not to vote as she recommends, but that Kisa cannot be held responsible if certain tragedies occur to allies, contacts or assets of the resistant clansman, that perhaps may not have otherwise happened if they were "protected" by the clan's support if the member proved loyalty. Whilst the clan has certain laws about how members can act against each other, Kisa knows how to push these laws to get away with it - especially with it being hard to prove her involvement. She may be effective, but popularity is a different issue. Some say her role is closer to that of a Myrmidon in many ways than just a Whip.
