	But 1864 proved a turning point when a Union soldier drifted in, calling himself [[~~Coterie: the Gone Jackals~~ (WoD)\|Quincy Gale]]. Quincy had been one of the union soldiers in the Army of the Cumberland who had fought in the then-ongoing Battle of Nashfield. Although a success for the union, Quincy was involved in a nighttime melee on Granny White Pike against Confederate rearguard cavalry, or at least that was the official story. In reality, his unit had been decimated by a single Confederacy officer with monstrous fangs and claws. This monster tore apart his entire squad, especially seeming to enjoy chasing down and shredding those whose courage failed and attempted to flee - but Quincy attempted to fight to the bitter end, but his firearms rounds seemingly had little effect on the monster, who easily overpowered and killed Quincy by draining him of his life's blood. Quincy had returned from death with the monster nowhere to be seen. He was now a fledgeling, recently embraced and abandoned by what Lilah presumed was a Gangrel and also presumed that the Gangrel had embraced Quincy because of his valour or resistance, or else some similar trait earned him the Embrace rather than the vicious deaths the rest of his companions had suffered. Lilah found herself naturally taking a mentorship or sire-like role over the fledgeling; perhaps in an attempt to atone for her previous failure. Under her guidance, he let himself be officially declared missing in action and took the name Keith Karloff~~, an amalgam of two people he knew, a friend back in New York named~~ Keith~~, and a Nebraskan soldier that he had respected and fought alongside earlier in the war whose family name was~~ Karloff. Lilah helped him get his footing, ~~introduced~~ him to kindred society and ~~he worked as an enforcer for her Saloon~~. ~~They~~ even occasionally became lovers, though this would eventually be something both would consider to have been a mistake, ~~although~~ they would remain friends for a long time thereafter.
